He's only considered so great because of his social importance during that time.

You have to laugh at Johnson there having a sneaky smoke in between rounds.

Maybe you should remove your rose tinted glasses and see the cold facts.

Technique wise, these guys can't compare with Povetkin, and i'm not even mentioning the size disparity here.
These guys couldn't hang with today's supermiddleweights, let alone HWs.

 That's one of the most ridiculous excuses i ever heard...so he willingly risked his precious title and drew with a washed up middleweight in O'brien...or a never has been Battling Jim Johnson.

Primitive, undersized old timers like Jack Johnson, with their primitive conditioning and primitive boxing techniques have no place in the modern era

As great at he was for his time, he wouldn't be worthy of carrying Klitschkos' spit bucket today

To me, modern heavyweight boxing began with Gene Tunney. The sloppy wrestling and gouging those guys used to do was closer to MMA, but without much skill. A well-schooled modern fighter would find all the holes he'd need, with the low handed lunging that the old-timers used to get into. Jack would have to fight cruisers and totally re-learn his craft to compete.

Some of the lads have started a collection (a $ here, a £ there, and even a few ¥ thrown in) to remedy your KB situation, BE.

I hope you won't take this the wrong way. Their motives are noble.

Is there a particular model you have a yen for when you pound out your posts ?

Wow, you have certainly changed your tune since you asked LUFC why he rate him so highly in his CLASSIC forum HW top 25 thread

I was peeling through this thread last night as I am putting together my own top 25 HW list. I just wondered why you think you have the knowlege to argue with me and not in the classic? While you have 'no reason to doubt' his high placing, you consider Povektin 'technically superior' to both Johnson AND the p4p beast Langford? That's all you had to say, i wouldnt have bothered humouring you!

As for your bit in bold, Johnson hardly ever exherted himself in the ring! This cannot be argued in you have seen footage of him AND have read one of the many bios on him. He visably smiled when fighting Burns, and did the same thing against Jeffries! What more proof do you need? I'm not saying he did this in every one of his fights as he did look crap in a few of them (too much drinking, partying and, lets not forget, betting scandles).

The difference is clear for all too see. The pace of a fight was a lot slower. But you have to ask yourself, why? Were these men physical incaperble of fighting at a faster pace because they wasnt THAT good? Or was it because boxers back then had to pace themselves for the 20 rounders, 25 rounders, 45 rounders etc? I tend to think it is the latter!

'Jack Johnson wouldnt even be a journeymen today'. That just sums it all up I think!

'These guys wouldnt live with the SMWs of today'. It just gets better. Would that mean, in 100 years time, Povetkin wouldnt be able to hang with the SMWs of 2112? I'm just curious?

At the end of the day, you have your beliefs (somewhat misguided and unsubstantial IMO, shown clearly with you saying to LUFC you have no reason to doubt such a high placing of Johnson, yet 3 months later you do have a reason to doubt it). And you obviously think i'm misguided by the smoke and mirrors of the past. I will no convince you that you are wrong, and you wont convince me that I am wrong.

If you would like to have a serious discussion on Jack Johnson, or anyone else for that matter, feel free to PM me.

Not surprised at all that there's a guy with a black and white avatar in this thread spouting utter bull****.

Compared to today, fighters from a century ago have technique so poor that I seriously doubt Jack Johnson could break the top 50 HW's. He would be EASILY, and I stress EASILY destroyed by any top 10 HW today. Talk of him making his way to the Klitschko's is utter insanity.

Proof you say? For me all it took was watching footage from 100 years ago of Jack Johnson fighting. For those who still can't see it....you should probably never leave the classic forum.

Can you please direct me to where I am spouting bull****. I've given an opinion and why I think Jack would be able to mix it with the best today. Again, I never said he 100% beats Wlad, but IN MY OPINION he beats the likes of Povetkin, Adamek and Arreola. Guy with 'a black and white Avatar' lol! Do you no who that is?

Like i said perviously, while the technique was different, does that mean fighters of today will not be able to hold the spit bucket of the HW champ in a 100 years time? Surely technique and skill will evolve just as quickly?

Out of curisity, give us your top 10 p4p ATG list. I'm interested to see how many 'black and white' fighters you have there

Win how? By doing that roly poly **** with his hands? He'd get savaged from Joe Louis' era onwards.

    1) It's Jimmy Wilde. People with black and white avatars are more likely to have their rose tinted specs on. A generalization, yes, but true none the less.

    2) Yes, it DOES mean that today's HW champs would likely be unable to break into the top 50 in 100 years, provided the sport remains popular. The sport evolves, training evolves, nutrition evolves, humans become bigger, faster, stronger, and people such as yourself can't seem to grasp what a huge impact that has.

    3) I will not post an ATG list as we're not ranking ATG's in this thread. We are discussing whether or not Jack Johnson, a man who was a great of HIS era, would be competitive today.

A century ago boxing was not the refined science it is today. If you really think throwing Jack Johnson with his crude technique and style in with the likes of Povetkin would result in a Johnson victory, there's nothing I can say that will change your mind; you're too far gone.

Thanks for replying. Like i said, with johnson's defence, as well as his vicious uppercut on the inside, he beats Pov in my opinion. He was a great inside fighter, and with his lack of size in today's division, he would be forced to the inside even more which would suit him. Personally i dont particuarly think the Povetkin of the Chagaev fight would be able to cope with him.

I tend to think it is rather sad that the likes of Mayweather, Pacquiao, Wald and Lennox will not be appreciated in the years to come as their style will be absolete. Also, with Joe Louis around in the 30s, he only has 20 years or so before his style becomes void in this discussion. it is rather a sad way of looking at it IMO
