Jeffries was no doubt being modest and gracious in defeat and Smith was exaggerating. It was never part of Johnson's style to go destroyer mode and try and get someone out of there in the first round. I'm not sure if it was yourself that compared a likely ness to Wlad in another thread, but I liked it a lot, taking very few risks until he knew that finishing his opponent was nothing short of a foregone conclusion. In an era of fights that would exceed 15 rounds it makes a lot of sense to fight that way.
You are an excellent poster ,you've just fallen foul of our resident Jack Johnson hater a phobic, bigoted person ,who descends on every thread of that era ,hijacking it and reducing it to a hate Johnson campaign. I think most of us are getting thoroughly sick of his extreme hatred ,bias, and complete lack of objectivity on this subject. Its a sick, unhealthy obsession that we are exposed to like a virus whenever Johnson's name crops up. Best ignore the sad hater.
Thanks McVEy, that is as good an article as i have seen. I feel pretty confident that Johnson was as honest as possible in that one. I think that was exactly what happened. Johnson won easily, but Jeffries was game, not completely outclassed and had his dangerous moments. I differ from most, in that i am not convinced that Jeffries wouldnt have beaten most other fighters on that night. I think Johnson's greatness was required to win the title.
