That's his quote in the article, which raised similar point,to Johnson's article. Admittedly,it's not difficult to see Quarry getting ruined by Louis.
Fascinating stuff. That Johnson picks Wills to beat Tunney and Dempsey to beat Wills is very interesting. "Tunney never had a real straight right." This is a claim that will bear some examination!
http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...712,6058275&dq=jack+johnson's+own+story&hl=en Here, Johnson talks about his fight with Stanley Ketchel. Prepare yourself a pinch of salt before you click, gentlemen, though it's a very interesting take.
I honestly kinda believe him here... That punch always looked fishy to me.. as to whether that was a planned exhibition that Ketchel double crossed him on or whether he had the plan himself to sell the rights... Seems to me.. something was up.
Johnson sparred with both , he fired Wills , later saying Harry could not stand the pace. Johnson was in his 40's when he sparred with Godfrey. This content is protected This content is protected
the fact that Quarry doesnt understand how a low guard can be useful and calls it fighting "like a washerwomen" shows that he was suspect....kind of reminds me of hearing tommy morrison on ringside saying he could beat Marciano.
Quarry was a good fighter in the 70's and did well vs the Big Black punchers but he was very good at his best, never ever great...Ali and Frazier were great...Quarry may have had the style to upset Foreman but no sure thing. Louis,Marciano would have KO'd Jerry...Marciano in the fashion of Frazier, a battle of attrition...Louis would have chopped Jerry up and stopped Gerry with his superb counter punching As far as the article...nice find...there was some truth in what Johnson said but a little jealousy because of the sick $$$ Dempsey was making....I agree with one thing he says for sure...Wills would have had an easier fight vs Tunney than Dempsey, I thing Dempsey had the wrong style for Wills...I am not sure Wills would have beaten Tunney but it would be a distance fight and Harry gets his licks in. I do like Johnson's guts to speak out and call "a spade a spade" no pun intended
You are right, funny but Jerry always had mental issues from his love/hate relationship with his Dad...Gerry Cooney suffered the same abuse but Gerry had a gentle nature...Morrison has always been a "Tommy Gun" a piece of **** Trashy guy...I want to know how Morrison could ever think he beats a puncher like Marciano or Louis with the middleweight chin he owned
he basically based it on size...saying that rocky wouldnt be big enough...and not "modern enough" too. thing is i remember Joe Hipp giving him life and death..now hip wasnt 185..but had he been lean he would have...so a guy who goes life and death with a fair journymen fighter like hipp would steam role Marciano....oh well...
