These two champs certainly had very interesting lives as we all know. A fair amount of men during the 1800s til the end of world war two had some exciting lives of which many here have studied...of all the men ive studied johnson had one of the most interesting lives ever....dempsey had one of the most exciting and dramatic lives, possible
George Barton mentioned this encounter in a column. Johnson and Burns apparently ended up squashing a 21-year-old feud at this luncheon. They ended up sitting next to each other and talking amicably, if Barton's report is true.
Apparently it was around April 17th, for the dedication of the Muldoon-Tunney trophy. The mayor of New York City, Jimmy Walker, made the unveiling speech and presented the trophy.
Ring magazine had a great article about Johnson and Williard ending there grudge. I havent been able to find it online.
Not just fighters or athletes... but writers and artists, also. Hemingway, Faulkner, Joyce, Picasso,... so many more.
If I remember the article right. Johnson went to acknowledge Williard and at first Jess wanted nothing to do with him but then he gave in and all was good. Dempsey gave Jess a job at his restaurant but then Jess was bad mouthing a brand of Alcohol Dempsey had his name on so he had to let him go. I also believe I read he was miserable and not easy to get along with so Jess doesnt look like the best guy either
