Interesting, haven't read it yet. But interesting to find such an old article from such an old newspaper on Internet when I can't find articles from 2007 online. Nice find.
It's a good find, his criticisms have merit and it shows criticisms of Dempsey aren't really new. But he does over egg those criticisms to hype his own era LOL just noticed that Mendoza happened to be searching for 'jack johnson knocked down' EDIT did you read the end where JJ says Dempsey drew the colour line in not wanting to spar with him?
This is the pot calling the kettle black. Johnson said he would have hung up the gloves if Dempsey lasted nine rounds with him. Amazing stuff considering many guys who weren't half as great as Dempsey went the distance, or sometimes defeated Johnson himself.
Mendoza is there any chance you could type one or two of the more interesting but out?? On iPhone it's all blurred so can't read?? Don't worry if you can't tho - thanks in advance if you can
Sour grapes...This article by Jack Johnson was written in 1929, two years after Dempsey retired. Johnson in need of money was trying to hustle up a bout with Dempsey or anyone. The con artist Jack Johnson, was 51 years old at that time. Interestingly enough, Johnson demeaned the great Joe Louis in much the same fashion when he was rejected, and thrown out of Louis's training camp by Jack Blackburn. P.S. He was a con artist after all ,who i as a boy once shook hands with in a Carnival in New York ,a year or so before he was killed in an auto accldent traveling to the second Louis/ Conn fight.
sounds like sour grapes because Johnson himself never gave a good black fighter a shot at the title but there is some truth to it as well just depends what angle you look at it from. I think Johnson did more to increase the color line because of problems outside the boxing circle caused by his confidence or arrogance, depending on the angle you see this from. Good article
What's with the claim that Tunney refused to fight Wills? Wasn't this the other way round? Is Johnson crafting the "facts" to fit his narrative?
Really doesn't rate Dempsey as a puncher, does he? It is interesting that this directly echoes one or two things said on the forum recently...we really are getting nowhere!
He goes over the top but each of the general points have a degree of merit to them You could imagine him On The Ropes Johnson 'name me 1 fighter other than Fulton that Dempsey scored a 1 punch KO over' Jenna J: 'Well there was Sharkey' Johnson: 'Who' Jenna J: 'He also knocked out Jack Sharkey with 1 punch' Johnson: 'He knocked out Sharkey with 1 punch?' Jenna J: 'Yes'
Johnson did not rate Dempsey, but he rated the likes of Schmeling and Baer and even Joe Louis even lower.
