His win provoked violent racial prejudice, and a 'Great White Hope' was sought to defeat him - the former champion James J Jeffries - whom he knocked out in the 15th round in a fight in 1910. He lost his title in 1915 to Jess Willard in 26 rounds. His relationship with one of the two white women he married led to a conviction under the Mann Act for transporting a white woman across state lines for immoral purposes, and he was a fugitive in Europe for seven years. 1946 - He died in a car accident, and his life became the subject of a Broadway play. 1954 - Among the first boxers admitted to the Boxing Hall of Fame. 2005 - The US decided to preserve the Johnson Jefferies fight because of it is "historically significant". Nat Fleischer ranked Johnson as the #1 All-Time Heavyweight Charley Rose ranked him as the #2 All-Time Heavyweight Herb Goldman ranked him the #4 All-Time Heavyweight
Hard to watch this footage(great work, BTW) and not rate JJ the greatest fighter pre-Dempsey at least. Anybody else think should Jeffries not be disq. after the second kd when helped into the ring?
thanks matt lol and I feel sorry for the guy who would protest Jefferies being held up at the stadium I also think had it not been for the great wave of people rushing to Johnson after the fight, something would have happened. It almost seems like the white crowd that rushes to Johnson in the ring sooths out the intense emotions in the crowd.
This is one of the greatest things I have ever seen PERIOD - awesome absolutely awesome (great music too - what's that called) - god I wish Johnson could've known how many people now think he was one of the greatest ever - the man was unlike any other heavyweight champion in history - a genius - and this vid opitumises (if thats how you spell it?) that.
Seriously, that is a great video. You really captured what was going on in the Jeffries fight, brilliant vid that Reznick.
Love how the crowd jumps up when he gets knocked down, only for him to get back up and knock the guy clean out right after. And the whole Jeffries fight and post-fight makes me warm inside. Amazing video reznick! **** early 1900's whitey
Nat Fleischer callked Jack Johnson the greatest heavyweight he had ever seen.. Wow, to think that little old me shook his hand in NYC,not long before he was killed in a car crash !!!
Another great video Reznick! I watched Unforgivable Blackness again the other day, it's great how you managed to get most of his career highlights into 7 minutes or so!
You're the first person I've seen on the internet or in person to say (and I believe you) that you've met Jack Johnson.
wow thanks a lot guys. Its real nice to read all your feedback. These awesome comments are the rewards I seek out when creating these highlights! And the clip at the end with Sam McVey is from the Willard fight, but I just found it necessary to include the footage with McVey. Can someone remind me who the two people standing beside Jefferies during the handshake sequence are? I know they are shaking hands with Sullivan. And I believe one of them is Corbett. Can anyone tell me exactly who they are? Thanks! Also if anyone has any suggestions for the table of contents, or the short bio, PLEASE lend me some advice. And Burt, its an honor to share the same message board with the man who shook the Galveston Giant's hand.
Yes B, My father took me to a deli on 42st @Bwy..Next door there was a " small Carnival called "Huberts Flea Circus"..Hard to believe a man would attach fleas to a small chariot, and they [the fleas] would pull it. Well down in the basement, as an added attraction old Jack Johnson with a beret on his head would talk to the crowd, and sign autographs if asked...We didn't impose...Sorry now..I shook his hand with other customers...Being so young, I only knew what my father told me, that he [JJ] was once heavyweight champion...Later on i understood Lil Arthurs place in fistic history...He died a couple years later from a car accident while driving [he loved speed] to the second Joe Louis/Billy Conn fight.b.b.
Great great tribute! The people rushing in the ring.... the police stopping the video..... the racist drawing of him eating the watermelon. You did a fine job of capturing some of the many racial inequalities dehumanizational aspects of those times for blacks.
