I am currently working on my seventh book: In the Ring With Jack Johnson. I am in need of research assistance. I am looking for a primary source newspaper report for the Jack Johnson vs. Ben Taylor boxing bout that took place on or about July 31, 1908 in Plymouth, England. Can you locate any local or semi-local next day August 1, 1908 (or soon thereafter) report on the bout? Such as the local Western Evening Herald or any nearby newspaper, or the London Sporting Life? I can offer you a complimentary copy of the book when it is completed, as well as your name in the acknowledgements section. Thanks, Adam This content is protected
Hi adam. I think I can be of some assistance but I'm unsure how much. I've found a report from the manchester courier and lancashire general advertiser from august 1 1908. Now I wouldn't really class it as local ro even semi local as I perceive manchetser to be a fair way away from plymouth, so I dunno if it falls within your acceptable criteria. Anyways here's the link. http://www.britishnewspaperarchive....r july&anysearch=jack johnson ben taylor july

Yes mcvey that's the same article I found. Not sure if it can be called local which was my concern. Johnson was a big deal in 08 so i'm surprised how difficult it proves to find articles on him in this fight.
Johnson gave an exhibition a couple of miles from me, on the site of my partners old flat. Apparently Johnson had Tayor down multiple times ,some say 10.
Funny how the world works eh? Yeah i've seen a few summaries on the fight but hard getting an actual local write up which surprises me.
Thanks gents. I'd love a local article written by someone who was at the fight, but will take what I can get. Unfortunately, the link to that Manchester article requires one to pay for it.
