Jack Johnson v James J Corbett?

Mcvey makes numerous mistakes. That was one of them. Another was failing to understand that Corbett beat several hall of fame fighters. More problematic for our resident idiot is one of those guys was a man who KO'd Johnson quickly. You are correct.

boat to a real Dreadnought of the ring,
when in the fourth round of his exhi-
bition bout with Jack Johnson, the heavy-
weight champion of the world, he knock-
ed that pugilistic phenom. to the canvas
at Johnson's training quarters at the Seal
Rock house.

And it was no fluke knockdown. Com-
ing out of a clinch near the end of the
last round ''Gunboat' swung a right over-
hand chop which took Johnson flush on the
chin. The negro went down as prettily
as any fighter ever hit the matted ring,
and when he got up he was dazed so
much that George Little, Johnson's mana-
ger and timekeeper, called time, cutting
the ground short fully a minute and see-
ing to it that the naval scrapper did no
more sparring with the champion during
the rest of the afternoon.

Smith had shown in the first three
rounds that he boxed that he could reach
Johnson with a right over-hand chop, and
he landed this blow on Johnson frequent-
ly. Smith and Johnson slammed each
other around good and hard, and the fans
who visited the Seal Rock camp to wit-
ness the sparring exhibition felt before
the end of the second round of the Smith-
Johnson bout was over that they were
seeing the real thing.

From the moment he donned the gloves
up to the last round Smith displayed
little fear of Johnson's hitting ability
and he mixed punches with him at every
opportunity.

My take.

1 ) Smith a raw novice his hard enough to knocked Johnson silly. He wasn't a short guy. He could fight some and hit some, worthy of a title shot himself.

2 ) It was not a fluke knockdown. Johnson was out.

3 ) Johnson was not puncher, Smith did not fear him. Smith did not have a good chin either, he was Ko'd a few times by no names didn't have a good chin. IMO, Corbett was as durable as Smith.

 

What are Corbett's best wins?

Unless you think that the version of Sullivan that he beat, had enough left to beat Peter Jackson, his best result is the draw against Jackson.

That leaves you with his win over a shell of Sullivan as his best actual win.

So what is his second best win then?

Probably Killrain or McCaffrey when they were also a bit past their best, and beyond that it gets a bit thin.

Corbett with ease. Jim did everything better than Johnson.

Had better defence?
Was better inside?
Had a better chin?
Better uppercut?
You are basing your statement on Corbett's 20 fight resume which has a 11-4-3 and 1 and a 1/4 minute of grainy footage? Prime Corbett was ko'd by one punch to the mid section from a man inside the middleweight limit.

I would favor Johnson based on their resumes. But I also believe that Corbett's resume can be misleading. It is true that he was knocked out with a single punch by both Fitzsimmons and Jeffries, but he gave each plenty of trouble prior to being knocked out. Even in his second fight with Jeffries, it took the prime Jeffries ten rounds to finish the 37-year old Corbett who had been out of action for several years despite hurting him early in the fight. After winning the title from Sullivan, Corbett was not seen that frequently in the ring. Probably his best efforts were against Choynski, Jackson, and Sullivan. It is regrettable that prime Corbett's skills were not seen so often, nor preserved much on film. While his skill level was far above that of Tom Sharkey, he did not fare well against the sailor. So while I would pick Johnson to win, I believe Corbett-Johnson would be an interesting match and a real clinic on scientific boxing. I think it would go the full 25 rounds and would be very interested in what tactics each would use on the other.

 

LOLOL forget Johnson and Corbett ... McVey vs Mendoza ... the true classic.

 

I think both these guys are wildly overrated. that said, i have a hard time seeing Corbett beating Johnson based on the available footage.

JJ is just too big and too skilled at imposing his grinding game. the best i could say in Corbett's favour is that he might give Jj a few awkward rounds at the start until he slowed down.

 

Corbett wouldn't beat GGG. He never beat a real heavyweight in his prime.
