Galento was stopped by the three biggest punchers he faced, Louis and the Baer Bros. He was also stopped twice on cuts, once by 168lbs Al Gainer,Galento was 26 ,and in his prime for Gainer. , he weighed 220lbs in that one. If he doesnt foul out, he gets shredded by Johnson.

 

Are you trying to compare Johnson to Louis or Bear as a puncher?


Are you trying to suggest Johnson was an offensively minded fighter?

None of the above apply to Johnson, as he was a safety first type of fighter who had his best success clinching smaller opponents, and hitting them while they are tied up. Johnson mostly was aggressive when his opponent was hurt, tired, or severely overmatched.

Let's not pretend Johnson could not fight dirty and get a DQ too. He threw low blow combinations vs. a novice Jeanette who claimed to weigh under 170 pounds when he last fought Johnson. He hit and floored Burns on a break too.

 

Neither Baer brother was able to put him down though despite Galento being woefully out of shape (even more so than usual). He eventually retired in his corner claiming an injury.

Safe to say that Jack Johnson was not the puncher that Joe Louis or the Baer brothers were. It's either a cuts stoppage, corner retirement, decision win or Galento fouling out, but I can't see Jack Johnson necessarily "bettering" Joe Louis's win, aside from the fact that he probably won't hit the canvas.

 

I'm not suggesting anything. I am merely remarking that concerning Galento's chin ,he was stopped by the three biggest punchers he faced and twice stopped on cuts by 168lbs Al Gainer, whom he outweighed by 52lbs,and the very moderate Marty Gallagher who was 32-19-5, I think it entirely plausible that Johnson could duplicate anything Gainer and Gallagher could do. I also think it extremely likely, nay highly probable ,that he could emulate the likes of

And out point Galento, none of the above's most fervent admirers would claim they were in Jack Johnson's class as a boxer.
All of them outpointed Galento.

Neil Clisby, a sometime sparring partner for Johnson who had won 2 of his last 4 fights gave Galento a hiding before stopping him in 7 rds.
Jack Johnson had over 80 fights he was DSQ'd ONCE, in the second round of a fight in which he had swept the first round. I posted the fight report here recently the crowd and the referee did not see a low blow,and this was included in the fight report, there were NO multiple low blows .

After outclassing Joe Jeanette for a round and a half, Jack Johnson, The
Negro Heavyweight Champion of the World, lost the bout at the National
Athletic Club [Phila.] last night on an alleged foul.
Jeanette, after being thumped in lively fashion in the first round, assumed
a crouching pose in the secondround. He undertook to run in and clinch,
ducking a vicious right hand swing. Johnson ripped a right hand hook up for Jeanette's jaw. The latter dropped to the floor,writhing in apparent agony.
He claimed to have been struck a foul blow.
He was removed to the dressing room and the club physician substantiated
his claim. Johnson was promtly disqualified. Jeanettte professed to be in
great pain and lay in his dressing room in apparent agony. It is understood
that the police proposed to keep Johnson to keep Johnson, Jeanette and
the club officialunder surveillance."


N .B .Jeannette's claim to have weighed 165lbs for this fight with Johnson is bull**** ,because 4 months later he scaled 185lbs for a fight with Sam McVey.

I'll assume you are talking about Fitzsommons. Wasn't Billy Conn 167 pounds when he slapped Louis around? Unlike Conn, a 167 or 172 pound Fitzsimmons could hit, which brings up the question, what happens if Galento lands a good one here?

Come to think of it, Choynski who was in the 160 pound range knocked Johnson out.

It seems you are clutching at one fight report that suits your agenda. Big surprise there. Once again, there were reports posted here which spell out how Johnson fouled and went low. Do you deny all of them?

It comes down to this at the end of the day.

There are not many ways to beat a prime Jack Johnson.

You have to either be a relentless pressure fighter of the Hart/Frazier school, or you have to be a technical fighter who can beat Johnson at his own racket.

Short of fitting into those two categories, it is going to take a fighter who is an all time great in their own right.

Gallento has some good tricks, but they won't be enough.

 

Please, never put these two names together again.
