Seriously, could the fine-tuned fighting machine Calzaghe have pulled off for 10 rounds what O'Brien did for 6? Is that so far-fetched?
Jack Johnsom would dominate and Knoclout Joe Calzaghe Jack Johnson was a muderous puncher on the inside, god help any fighter that he gets a hold of in a clinch, Johnson would of done as he pleased with Calzaghe, unfair match up for Calzaghe. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZ_Dguh9hEE[/ame] Notice how Bernard use the clinch in round 2 against Calzaghe to nufilfy his offense, the difference with Johnson being that Jack would be digging in hard shots into Joes ribs and body and also uppercuts to the head [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUJaTMbWN9U&feature=related[/ame] [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LG3T32gI3g&feature=related[/ame]
10 rounds and a large ring? I would say Clazaghe on points. Johnson had trouble vs Jack O'Brien, who looks like a poor man's Joe Calzaghe on film.
the johnson-o'brien fight was a no decision thing. if it was 10 rounds to a decision i cant see Joe calzaghe beating Jack johnson. and in fact Johnson could quite possibly knock Calzaghe out early.
No surprise here then.atsch Calzaghe beats two L H VY's in his entire career, one is 39 and shot. The other 43, the 43 year old loses by the narrowest of margins. Both drop him with right hands,[Johnson's best punch]. O Brien was a mobile jab, and run artist. He fought absolutely NOTHING like Calzaghe. I would pick both Tommy Burns and O Brien to beat Calzaghe. Question, does Calzaghe beat Joe Jeannette?
Johnson was a mostly stationary fighter, with a low punch rate, who did his best work on the inside. Calzaghe moves his feet better, does not trade on the inside, and would not just stand there like Ketchel, Flynn or Burns, allowing Johnson to latch on. Joe is talller then these guys, and might even have a better reach than Johnson himself. A much smaller and light punching O'brien in fact out jabbed Jack Johnson in his prime. Calzaghe can do the same. If these were modern rules, Johnson could not hold and hit as frequently as he did without being docked points.
Joe Calzaghe had aged himself by the time he got to fight Hopkins and Jones, if that's the two performances that you choose to define him through then you're narrow minded.
A few things to the feeble minded. 1 ) Most of the guys Clazaghe beat on fight night were well above 175 pounds. In fact some were over 180 pounds This is 15-20 pounds more than O'Brien who was even with Johnson or according to some reports better by a shade in 6 rounds. 2 ) Clazaghe was older himself when he beat Hopkins who today is still #1 at 175 pounds, and Roy Jones. 3 ) Johnson best punch is not the right hand, its the uppercut. Clazaghe does not get hit often with the uppercut, not does he in- fight often, which was Johnson's best stuff. Calzaghe also has a mobile jab and likes to move around the ring. What film have you seen on O'Brien? Likely none, so please spare us with your analysis. Some of us here have life and work, so reply all you wish. If something is funny, or false, I might chime back in to correct you.
Calzaghe at 5' 11" was an inch and a half shorter than O Brien ,both carried around 167lbs when they were at their best.
SJS19 is 100% correct. Mcvey is known to use the best dates and weights to support his case. Sometimes he will take them out of context.
It is CALZAGHE, not Clazaghe ,try repeating it to yourself a few times Rainman. You have no idea what Calzaghe's opponents weighed on fight night. Hopkins is still the Champ at 175lbs because the division is dire. Longevity must be measured with quality of opposition. A totally shot Jones still dropped Calzaghe. Which proved he was vulnerable to sneak right hands. Johnson's best punch was the uppercut, delivered with the right hand. Calzaghe was out jabbed by Kessler. Calzaghe was dropped by the only two lightheavyweights he fought, neither of whom compares to Johnson for power. I have seen O Brien v Burns, and sparring with Greb . What have you seen? I've seen most of Calzaghe's fights ,he was not particulalry mobile at all ,he liked to stand in front of his opponents ,and fire off quick salvoes, many of then delivered with open gloves. He always had fast hands, but often did not turn his wrists over , was cautioned for slapping several times and incurred hand injuries because of not punching correctly. If you want a funny post How about you reply to the one where someone stated Choynsky pawned Johnson? Oh,wait, it was you wasn't it. Now get off to the dyslexic school Rainman.
I rate Calzaghe on his performances against Reid,Starie, Mitchell, Sheika, Bika,Veidt,Eubank,Lacy, Brewer, and Woodhall, all of whom were when Joe was prime, and all of whom were over 30lbs lighter than Johnson.
