This was the latest fight I found worth mentioning. I just watched it a couple hours ago. And I have 2 say it was the 1st fight I've seen from 1897 forward that I enjoyed thoroughly. This was my 4th Johnson fight now, and I had already grown accustomed to his way of doing things. Tying his opponent up constantly, smiling and laughing, talking to Flynn, and to the crowds. I watched this fight in color since it was the most complete version, and wasn't on dailymotion, which is only a last resort 4 me. Now to the summary: The two men had each other locked into fouls for the first four rounds. Johnson had both of Flynn's arms, and Flynn had his head buried in Johnson's chest. No action. Things became very interesting in the 5th. Flynn, tired of being manhandled, finally reached the desperation phase. Past the halfway point of the round, he did something I'd never seen before. He grabbed Johnson's neck and pulled it forward so that his own head would connect w/ Johnson's chin. The sixth may have been the dirtiest round of the entire fight. Flynn was now leaping to get his headbutts to Johnson's chin. Johnson, starting to get angry, opened up with the first big barrage of the fight. A series of nearly a dozen lefts and rights from Johnson. The seventh began clinch-free. In this round Johnson began putting together a purposeful plan of offense. Johnson was now pumping lengthy series of left jabs to keep Flynn outside. Next Johnson began adding uppercuts into the clinches. Once free of them, setting up the right hand w/ the left jab. The eighth was punctuated by more Flynn fouls. Leaping and headbutting, and now hitting on the break as well. Flynn was DQ'd in the ninth. Verdict: Not a great fight, but speaking just for myself, I enjoy fights w/ lots of fouling, and this one was foul-filled. Very entertaining. I will call it a classic dirty fight, but from all other perspectives it would fail to be considered a classic.
I'll have to watch it again, its been a few years. I got stoned and drunk one night about 4 years ago and watched every Jack Johnson fight I could find on youtube. dont remember if this was one of them
Fine review. Like most Johnson fights on film, his opponent wasn't big enough to really challenge him, but Flynn made it interesting by turning into a Billy Goat.
Horrible fight between a guy who was basically a bar room brawler and another guy who boxed like Robert Mitchum acted...like he didn't give a damn.
Oh good. I was just clarifying. I love Mitchum as well. Heaven Knows Mr. Allison, The Sundowners, Cape Fear, The Longest Day-so many good movies.
