When you look more closely, the Ketchel fite was more of an exhibition until Stan got dishonest. M'man then proceeded to end the fite right then N there proving he could take a man out whenever he wanted, something only Johnson couldve achieved. that's superiority and its becuz of his superiority that no one could touch him

Willard was a different story. Jack was ready for pasture at the time

Yes, but then again....we all know how carefully Johnson matched himself in his best days ;)

Eh, I dunno Rooster. I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with you there. All it proved was that Johnson could take out a scrawny little MIDDLEWEIGHT whenever he wanted. We should expect that.

Interesting matchup. Johnson could manhandle him, maybe. But Dempsey style and attributes seem to work far more on a Jack Johnson type than Gene Tunney. I tend to think guys that like to fight in the pocket could get potentially out-worked by Dempsey type swarmers. Johnson was damn strong, though, so it could be a very messy altercation. Johnson was plenty smart and ahead of his time so could probably squeeze a decision regardless. If it's more of an endurance contest, Johnson could tire Dempsey out. In 10 or 12 rounds, he's capable of out-working Jack.

If Johnson can nullify Dempsey's speed and superior workrate,he takes a decision. Johnson was a vastly more skilled boxer. If he can't,Dempsey wins.

I think Johnson would pick him off outside and frustrate Dempsey with clinching inside.

Johnson decision or over a longer distance he'd eventually wear Dempsey down. Dempsey has a punchers chance early, after the early rounds though Johnson would have completely taken over if he's still standing

With a level playing field, I've always liked Johnson in this match-up...strong enough to contain Dempsey in the clinches, cute enough to nick enough points to outscore him and avoid Dempsey's best. However, in the political climate of the time, that may not be enough to secure Johnson the decision...

One of the first times I agree with you. Johnson in my opinion is one of the best heavies in history.

He would give EVERY heavy in history a run for their money. He's like a heavyweight Bernard Hopkins.

Very interesting match up. I'm more of a Dempsey fan, but would pick Johnson. I think he's got the right style to neutralize Dempsey's offense and land some good uppercuts on the crouching Dempsey. Dempsey was a physical specimen who could KO about everybody, but Johnson was a physical specimen in his own right. I'd pick Johnson by UD, but the Dempsey of the Willard fight would have a great chance to put the othe Jack on his ass.

I don't think he was that scrawny for a middleweight , he weighed just over 170lbs for the Johnson fight.

You're wrong. It's not generally known but in any fight in which "Johnson" looked " touchable ", it wasn't actually him in the ring. Johnson employed a doppelganger , a double.
In several high profile fights ,Johnson was actually tucked up in bed shagging the bejesus out of a vanilla complexioned young lady, whilst his sparring partner Kid Carter stood in for him.
This of course accounts for his less than stellar performances in these bouts. Here is a rare picture of Johnson next to his double.

Only respected archivists, and revered historians like myself know which fights Johnson actually took part in. So really, you have to leave any evaluation of his abilities to us hallowed few.

ps. Carter is on the left.

    I think.

Well, then it is safe to say we can not rely on Jack to have a "best day" with any given match-up. More reason Dempsey would beat him.

A 170 pound man is SCRAWNY when standing next to an adonis like Jack Johnson. I think we can agree on that;)

We do , but a 170lbs middleweight is not scrawny , in fact he is not a middleweight, I think we can agree on that?:good

I like Johnson in this fight

I think Johnson may be a little to strong and smart for Dempsey. Either could hit the canvas in my eyes. Johnson appeared to a have a rock solid chin, but Dempsey certainly had power. On the other hand Dempsey's chin was never a sure thing and Johnson's power is highly underrated in my eyes and could have easily ended the Ketchel, Burns, Jeffries and Flynn fights earlier if he wanted, but due to the racial hate, wanted to do some serious damage to his White opponents.

All the talk about Dempsey's great foot work and quick hands aren't going to help him that much though, as usual he won't use them to the best of his attributes abilities. We know how Dempsey's gonna fight and Johnson should be able to counter and time Dempsey coming in, whilst him up on the inside, although he certainly won't have it all his own way, however Johnson spoiling and pot shooting should neutralise Dempsey's game plan

Johnson's durability will also be better. The longer this fight goes on for the less chance Dempsey has and if it were to go past 20 rounds I could see Johnson stopping him in the early 20s, whereas in a 15 rounder like I expressed before, I feel Johnson takes it close but clear.

In a fight with no prejudice, with fair redding and judging I think Johnson is smart enough and strong enough to win. I can't see either stopping each other in a 15 rounder, however both may end up hitting the deck. Johnson spoils his way to a close but clear UD, however a Dempsey win is certainly not out of the question and if it where to be a 10 rounder would consider him being the favourite.
