This would turn into a clinic on both sides, for rough and dirty infighting at times...awesome match up. Johnson wanted this fight...felt that the older fighters like Sullivan, Jeffries and Fitz were superior to Dempsey...
Dempsey by a knockout in the 10th round. Dempsey in his brief prime was an absolute savage. Only Johnson's craftiness and skill keep him erect this long. The Dempsey of the Tunney fights is a different story. The Dempsey from 1918-23 would defeat Johnson and just about any other heavyweights at or near his size.
Both of them are horrible overrated fighters. I think Dempsey probably wins. Horrible fight to think about.
Dempsey is the guy who gets overrated here especially in this day and age, because this is the age of media friendly names and faces. People hear 'Jack Dempsey', and figure hes some combo of Jack Bauer and Jason Bourne...their imagination runs wild. Not to say he wasnt formidable, but he looked poor against a great boxer, looked bad against a MW and only looked devastating against journeymen. He misses with SO MANY shots he throws. Hard to imagine a guy so limited (but obviously brave) causing Johnson, a master boxer, real problems.
Johnson doesn't look all that great on film either. Toying with miniature fighters like Burns and Ketchell and playing with an inept Flynn doesn't make for pugilistic idol worship. Both men could fight though...we all know that and at thier respective best it would make for an interesting matchup. Boxer vs puncher is always a good fight and here is a classic example of that. I'd say Dempsey early....or Johnson by decision. The first few rounds will be interesting as Jack will attempt to end it as quick as he can. If he can't then I see Johnson frustrating Jack and marking him up en route to a points win. Either scenario is a plausible one but either way it would be fun to watch.
Probably, Jack Johnson by UD. He's just so crafty, frustrating to fight, a lot of good inside work, and a lot of clinching. I'd pick Johnson to outpoint Dempsey, definitely.
:? Stick to Dempsey or Johnson dude, confused the **** out of me when you put Jack. Jack was so physically strong, so it's not like Dempsey would be the boss in the ring, in fact he'd be far from it. Dempsey would have more success than the likes of Jeffries, Burns, etc but ultimately be outclassed and out muscled by one of the smartest boxers and arguably the best ring generalship for many years to come. The only way I see Dempsey winning against a prime Jack Johnson would be a big Hayemaker Johnson don't see, or if Johnson pushes to knock Dempsey out and gets dragged into a brawl.
I favour Johnson he is very underrated on this forum, but at that time in boxing history Dempsey was unique no one had ever fought like him before so maybe he causes Johnson a whole lot of trouble.
Bumping this after many weeks but it´s interesting to notice how the poll became almost exactly 50-50......
