Johnson would be stronger, Young better technically, although Johnson was good technically as well.
    Who wins this matchup?

Johnson every day and Sunday. I was a big Young fan back in the 70’s but his offense was absolutely bottom rung. A cutie on defense.

Johnson wrecks havoc on the inside. His strong suit. Decision win over 15 rounds.

Johnson under the old rules, Young under the modern rules. More versatile at long range

    Young.

How much of a chance Johnson has depends on how many rounds. If its a 6-10 rounder Johnsons got a decent shot. But at 12-15 Jimmys one of the best point fighters ever.

Young would outbox him rather easily. Johnson would try to wrestle and use his footwork and Jimmy would out point him on jabs and counters. Johnson wouldn't be able to hurt him, Young took the best punches from Foreman, Lyle, and Shavers in the rematch. Young had far better wins on his resume.

Absolutely no doubt Johnson was the far greater fighter. Young had a poor offense and his safety first style never impressed the judges. We are talking an all time great heavyweight champion vs a contender.
