Denver Ed Martin was considered the best jabber of his era. He was 6'3.5" tall with an 82"reach Johnson outpointed him over 20rds flooring him 4 times. In their second fight Johnson kod him in 2rds knocking him out for so long Johnson was held by the authorities in case Martin did not recover. The second fight was promoted to produce a challenger for Champion Jim Jeffries after Johnson kod Martin the manager of the Century Athletic Club offered a $15,000 guarantee to Jeffries to fight Johnson, but Jeffries had an attack of deafness.

There is not one fighter who ever laced up gloves who could beat a prime jack johnson. If he exist, i sure like to see it. Johnson was a POWER PUNCHER, and Norton didn't fare well against those types of fighters. Johnson had better endurance. Was shorter so therefore less area to hit. Had impeccable defense and was rarely ever hit despite fighting 20-50 rounds. Johnson was a great out fighter but the best infighter in all of boxing. It wouldn't matter if Norton was taller and had longer arms like tree limbs, johnson had the best technical boxing skill of any fighter, so it wouldn't matter how big the guy was or how strong he was, the guy would never land a punch. Johnson would simply evade anything he threw until the right opporuntity came along and then he'd beat his brains out once he caught him on the inside. Put the Johnson videos in slow motion, or else your not watching Johnson, you won't see what he is doing. Ay fighter he simply ties up. If you throw a jab he simply blocks it and slides a right hand over it. There is no chance to counter that kind of a punch. This is why Johnson could talk to the crowd when he fought and laugh. The guy didn't even have a mouth guard and still had all his teeth. Norton certainly would have lost a few if he didn't have one.

Often these debates are useless because the person posing the question or arguing other fighter> johnson, simply hasn't seen enough of Johnson to understand that during his prime he was not beatable. He has everything a boxer could want. He was basically the perfect boxer at that point, and its no surprise Ali modeled himself after Johnson. Hell even the phantom punch that dropped liston was taught to Ali by stepin and fetchit who learned it from Johnson. Johnson had every trick in the book. Hand speed of mike tyson, endurance and dancing and footwork of ali, strength of george foreman, he used to wrestle with bulls for god sake. Ali was the great sales man, the great charismatic man of boxing and probably the 2nd best heavyweight of all time. But Johnson was the best heavyweight to ever lace up gloves and head to head he beats them all. Height meant nothing, Johnson had no trouble disposing of the dancing denver giant Martin at 6'7 and a reach to eychewawa. The fighter who probably would give Johnson the most trouble would be a prime ali because of hand speed (ali's hands were often so fast you couldn't see the punch to move out the way) and the fact that he is a mirror of johnson's style. But I doubt the student would beat the master here.
