Johnson...too skilled for norton. Great defense. He'd probably parry nortons jab, and uppercut him in the clinches...Johnson would do this with a humongous smile on his face and make sure he psychologically tortures him for the whole 12-15 rounds without knocking him out.
The point I made to Mendoza ,which he did not respond to, probably because he has never boxed,is that Norton had success with the jab for a specific reason, and I asked him what it was,he doesn't know. You over simplify with your explanation and only half explain why it worked . The right glove is there to parry or catch the jab/hook for 90% of fighters,we know that,it isn't unique to Norton and Futch even Marciano had his right cupped to catch the jab . What was specific is what Futch had spotted about Ali. Namely that when he jabbed his own right was not in position to intercept the oncoming jab of his opponent because he didn't have it close to his face , but held it away from his body out to the side as he jabbed ,a basic flaw. That' s why Norton' s return jab would land.
Actually classic boxing does not require having gloves high here specifically the right glove to catch or parry the jab. This is just one of many ways to intercept or avoid a jab or counter jab.
I never implied it was required,I said 90% of boxers use that method . For every Jimmy Slattery,Ali, there are a couple of thousand who employ that defence . I was specifically talking about Ali and why Norton was successful in parrying Ali's jab and, more importantly landing his own. You can put your chin down in your shoulder and use your left glove to parry the jab but you can't throw a return jab from that position. You can throw the jab from waist height , bringing it up ala Bob Foster ,Jesse Burnett ,Holmes on occasion etc, but unless your right hand is up to protect your chin , you are liable to receive a counter. Do you want to argue the point?
LOL, Ed Martin had a glass jaw and could not take a body shot at all. He was KO'd six times very early. When Johnson fought a 5'10 " 160.5 lbs Jack OBrie he was out-jabbed, and this happened in Johnson absolute prime. Insert excuses. If a much smaller and lighter man could do this to Johnson, Kenny Norton has a field day. I agree with you on Ali. No one out muscled Johnson? Willard did. Johnson didn't even try to clinch him! How come a much smaller man in O'Brien out jabbed Johnson? Unanswered! How come a crude fighter like Ketchel could produce a large mark and knock Johnson down later? How come the films show Johnson didn't even try to clinch Willard? Answer: Willard was bigger, not smaller or older. Ed Martin was a glass joe type. A string bean. He could not take a punch and has multiple early KO losses. He might last 3 rounds with Jeffries. Might. Ruhlin had a much better chin, equal weight and a better punch in comparison to Martin. He was the better title choice. Fans didn't like KO 1 or 2 results back then. I have the filmed sparring between Ruhlin and Martin. It mostly for fun and takes place on a road, not in a ring. Ruhlin gives Martin a rubber chicken to end it. Martin's jab shown on the film doesn't look nearly as good as Norton's. Gus may have picked him to spar, because Martin had a reported KO 1 loss to Jeffries. Back then fighters used to hire other fighters who fought their competition. If Ed Martin is on another film, I have not seen it. Same excuses! O'Brien according to primary sources beat Johnson. :deal Where's Johnson's defense here? :deal I have read Johnson had blood in his mouth vs O'Brien. :deal I'd bet you but you welch, so how about I just shame you if you disagree for the 110th time by showing you if you cry about it? And yes , Ketchel produced a visible mark on Johnson before he floored him. Must I shame you again here showing you the papers that say this? Ketchell was a short crude man. Not seeing this " defense" on Johnson, unless we are talking about clinching small men, or the old and tired. What is reported is just that. There are tons of fights out there that are reported but not confirmed and many of the local newspapers of the time are defunct. When a fight is reported you can either dismiss it as fiction or realize it likely happened and leave a small possibility of an error.
He was obviously bored with those little white guys, so was the crowd. He intentionally let Stanley Ketchup knock him down....then as soon as Johnson got up he knocked Ketchup OUT.
Norton was hell for boxers, giving two of the top five ever in Ali and Holmes fits .. This could go either way as Norton had size and reach with is own outstanding jab ..
why insert excuses, why not you insert your brain and notice JOhnson was a novice in a 6 round novice fight? FLOP MATE, see above. how about you mention Johnson was pushing 40? FLOP AGAIN MATE. its answered but you just had to DOUBLE FLOP by repeating your FLOP twice. did you think it was a barn dance or a boxing match? FLOP MATE. you shame only yourself when you repeat already FLOPPED remarks. Mendoza, for sure you are one of the few people on here whose quality of your posts would vastly improve if you posted blank ones. Why don't you save yourself serial FLOP and do that from now on.
