Firstly, find me someone uppercutting Marciano in a clinch. I would have to reexamine some film but as I remember he usually had his head all over the place when guys were trying (almost always unsuccessfully) to clinch.

Secondly, the dimension difference is nowhere near overwhelming. Johnson against Burns (arguably his best performance) was 6' 1/2" tall and weighed 192. He also had a rather uninspiring reach of 74".

Agreed, tho, a tough, tough fight where both absorb punishment.

So Marciano gets rid of Johnson quicker than he did Lastarza ,and certainly quicker than he didn't Lowry x2.

    "Without a lot of power?":think

I'll take a look next time I watch his fights. I think Johnson was a terrific uppercutter, and would land them in or out of the clinch.

Johnson isn't huge but he's a little bigger than Marciano. 74" reach might not inspire, but it's a whole 7 inches more than 67".
And we know 7 inches is plenty.

C*ckell had some success with the uppercut, as did Moore, why would Johnson have to be in a clinch to land it?

It was suggested earlier that Johnson would be landing the uppercut at will in the clinches. This started us on this avenue...

C*ckell was certainly not Marciano's best showing, one of his worst actually.

I am not saying that Johnson won't be landing, just I don't see him landing as often and as hard as Marciano.

Again, not a landslide either way. But I would be more comfortable betting on Marciano given what I have seen on film and read of contemporary accounts.

It would be a good test for Johnson to see if his style could work in a more modern setting. However, Rocky's short reach will become an advantage here when Johnson goes to clinch Rocky's short arms will still be able to fire with more power than Johnson has ever faced. Both take damage but I say Rocky will eventually land that suzy q and whenever it does Johnson will be gone. So I say Rocky by KO around the 13th.

Agreed. Marciano's relentless pressure and amazing stamina allowed him to fire shots hard to the head or body. Rocky would miss some, but he's also land. Like an old fashion tommy--gun if you will! Johnson's defense was not equipped to deal with this type of an attack.

Johnson was a defensive boxer without a lot of power, and suspect to aggressive skilled fighters and punchers. His chin to me is suspect as well. And he was better as an in-fighter, which is a negative in this fight as it puts Rocky in the range where he wants to be.

Johnson could not tame Marvin Hart in a high stakes match and lost. Hart was no Marciano, but he had a decent punch with stamina and guts.

I also agree with you about the clinches. Rocky would do more damage here.

Rocky via KO is my pick inside 10 rounds.

Picking his worst two results are you? I think Marciano was pre-prime vs Lowry, and Lowry had an outstanding chin! Johnson did not.

You could say the same for Lastarza. Marciano fought him slightly pre-prime. We are assuming primes here, correct?

In the rematch, Rocky KO'd Lastarza.

Now if I were to list all of Johnosn's losses and draws, and play your game you'd be reading 19 names. If I were to include fights that were close wins for Johnson we are talking 25+ or more.

Puts things in perspective, doesn't it?

Johnson did not have the punch activity or power to deter Rocky, nor the chin to take his bombs. He might make Rocky miss badly a few times like Moore did, but in the end, Johnson's getting out worked and outslugged.

Johnson's victory over a teenaged Sam Mcvey is not a fight to use as on film Sam McVey looks terrible. Next to him Marciano looks like Sugar Ray Robison.

    That's reasonable.
I like Johnson here,I think Marciano is too crude to regularly penetrate his defence.

Aren't you the poster who always trots out Johnson's fights with ,Choynski , O Brien and Hart?

Lastarza was pre -prime too was he not?
Marciano tko'd Lastarza in the 11th round, as I remarked, you say he will get Johnson out quicker than he did Lastarza.?
Lowry didn't have a top chin, he was sparked by Mathews and Rusty Payne the point, [which escaped you,] was that he was a cautious defensive fighter ,as was Johnson.

Still not found anyone to explain and interpret the posts for you?
    Bless!:-(

There are numerous fights where Johnson had a bad result. You're only two examples are fights that Rocky won. Pretty flimsy.

Rocky had but 12 amateur fights. How many did Lastarza have? At the time of the fight, Lastarza had 37 fights, Rocky just 23. There you have it.

Yes. Rocky stopped Moore in 9, Charles in 8, and Walcott in 1. If Johnson ran and played spoiler, he could last longer than 10, but he will not be winning the fight.

Check again, Lowry was stopped just three times in 148 fights! How many guys with this many fights were stopped less? Very few! Lowry's competition level was excellent. Matthews stopped Lowry near the end of his career. Neither Rocky nor Moore could stop Lowry.

Mathews stopped Lowry when Lowry was 31 years old!

Marciano might be the shorter man, but he's not necessarily smaller and I don't see him getting smothered or controlled in the trenches. I think this is a bad styles match-up for Johnson and while I think he could go the distance, he's probably getting outworked as the fight goes on.

Marciano PTS or late round stoppage.
