Some may say Joe Jeannete was a better fighter than either Charles or Walcott.

He was a crude looking f*cker to Moore and Louis AFTER they fought him.Louis states it in his autobiography and Archie is on film saying it . As they both fought him , maybe their opinion should carry some weight?

I've never said the size differential would be the deciding factor ,just that there is one, which you persistently downplay ,it isn't only reach, height its chest size, biceps size, forearm size .Again Walcott's dimensions have absolutely nothing to do with the size differential between Marciano and Johnson.:patsch Johnson was emphatically NOT a mauler.

Did they really say that the guy with half a dozen fights under his belt who Johnson faced was better than the veteran versions of Charles and Walcott?

Did they come to this conclusion staring up into the black lights?

Jeannette regularly featured in heavyweight rankings .I'm just giving you the low down which I am sure you already know.
You would have to ask them that.

Never said you did. But others have made that assertion on the thread and I simply responded to it.

Walcott has a similar dimensions in terms of chest and arm size to Johnson as well, mcvey.

His dimensions in general are similar to Johnson's, and therefore it's appropriate to use him as a point of comparison. If you don't have an exact comparison (and you said you didn't) then use the next best point of reference. Walcott is the better point of reference, in this case, since his physical dimensions match Johnson't more closely than most other heavyweight champions, Tyson included.

And Johnson was a fighter who could work at range, but liked to smother people in close. He liked to maul people on the inside and work them over with uppercuts. I don't see that style of inside fighting serving him all that well against Marciano.

Johnsons defense was far superior to either Walcott or Charles. Incomparable. Plus we are talking Prime Johnson who was a beast physically. Marciano would find it nearly impossible to land cleanly on Jack all the while being peppered both at distance and in close. Marciano was great but a brawling style was not the way to beat Johnson. One sided bout until the ref stops the fight.

Whether the fight is 15 or 25 I have little doubt Marciano would fight every minute of it.

Johnson never fought fighters who punched you anywhere round after round with the type of strength and stamina Rocky had.

Marciano beats the hell out of Johnson, Marciano was the type of animal Johnson could not break the will of or psyche out.

Hard to grapple and and hold a fighter who is strong doesn't tire and punches your shoulders, biceps, forearms, hips, neck.

What was the best heavyweight that Johnson proved his defense against?

When was Johnson's prime and how was this proven in the ring?

I'm really enjoying this discussion. I leaned towards Johnson at the start, but the guys making a case for Marciano have made it clear that it would be anything but a one way street. I was under the impression that Johnson was much bigger than Marciano, something like 30lb. 10lb is actually not that much.

Read the reports of the McVey fights. Marciano did not target arms and shoulders for his punches ,they were shots that did not find their intended targets! Johnson went 26 rounds in baking sun with a humidity that his giant opponent described as hotter than hell.Johnson was 37 years old.

He went 15rds to win over 225lbs Pat Lester in a Mexican Bullring in May, Johnson was 48 years old. He went 10rds to a decision loss when he was 53!

When did Marciano ever show that kind of stamina?

Those that saw Johnson live attest to his impenetrable defense. Fleischer rated him the greatest defensive boxer of all the hwt champions. Watching Johnson you see the feints, blocking, parrying, slipping, great jab and combinations of an ATG hwt. Johnson was used to an attacking opponent and in his prime would have handily beat Rocky and I believe quite easily. Rocky is all wrong to beat a prime Johndon. Put it this way Walcott came very close to beating Marciano. Walcott was nowhere close to the greatness of Johnson.

And which great heavyweights was this proven against? Tommy Burns? A decrepit, retired Jeffries? A 150 pound Sam Langford? A green Joe Jeanette?
