Marciano would turn out too strong inside for Johnson, not as easy to clinch as Jack was used to. Late stoppage.
I think Marciano is too brutal inside for Johnson to handle, also can't see Johnson doing anything to get Marciano out of the fight. Marciano KO7
Marciano showed against great competition that he could beat very good boxers with brilliant defences. The overrated Johnson on the other side never faced anyone near as good as Rocky, Marciano had the power to KO him, the pace to land at him, and the stamina what would be neccesary... Marciano KO 11 Johnson (96-94 on points)
I don't know about that. The version of Langford that Johnson fought, though young, would probably be as good as Walcott (the best fighter that Marciano fought?). Jeanette was also a very good fighter when Johnson took him on. Jeffries would be the best comparison for Marciano, but as we know that version of Jeffries, if not done, was all but, so the comparison is useless. Still, I feel you underate Johnsons level of competition. Having said that, this... Is true. Marciano does indeed have all the tools neccesary to make for a horrible nights work for Johnson. The clinch would be the thing. I'd pick Johnson to beat most fighters that he can close with, for whatever reason, and he can certainly close with Rocky. But Rocky (along with Lewis) might be the exception to that rule, for reasons you've outlined. So I think your prediction... ...is unreasonable to me. But it's not my prediction. I would suggest that a peak Johnson has the stamina to match Rocky Marciano and he'd need it. Johnons would not, in my opinion, be able to force Rocky to fight at his own pace. But he would be able to slow Rocky down. I'll pick Johnson to win a tight, unpopular decision.
Johnson´s chin is also overrated, like almost everything on him. What kind of punchers did he face who were in their prime? Forget Jeanette, Langford, etc., all these fights were when they started their career without any amateur background. Johnson would be in trouble against Marciano, who would swarm all over him, he wouldn´t respect Jack´s mediocre power, and that would be Johnson´s problem here... I don´t underrate Johnson´s competition, his reign as the Coloured Heavyweight Champion of the World was pretty impressive, but his best opponents (McVea, Langford, etc.) had only a handful of fights, so I wouldn´t overrated them...
I pick Marciano here, because he showed against master boxers with great defense and great movements (Charles, Walcott, etc.) that his non- stop punching swarming style (all punches were thrown with power, that´s a difference) was very effective against it... Johnson on the other side never defeated a great puncher in his prime, so I have to pick "The Rock"...
This is true, but Johnson is a different proposition. He will not be boxing and moving, at least not for large portions of the fight. He will be mauling and punching inside, he was a master. Whilst you and I can agree that Jeffries was pretty much done, but surely you still think of him as a great puncher?
This fight is near impossible to choose a winner, due to the fact that there were too many differences in rules and guidelines between the eras in which these men fought in. Johnson fought under London prize rules, and during a time when fights were scheduled for a lot more rounds. The glove sizes were different, as were refereeing principles. I suppose that Marciano would have a better chance of winning by knockout given his power, and Johnson's not being a terribly hard puncher, but if the fight went beyond the point that the Rock was accustomed to fighting in, Johnson would have a crack at a decision or late stoppage. Who knows though.
For me personally, a great puncher is not only a fighter who punches hard, a puncher also need the precision and the speed to land, 2 things Jeffries didn´t have anymore at this stage of his career... mauling and punching inside with mediocre punching power isn´t that recommendable against Marciano, except you will get KO´d...
Johnson by dec ,nobody would have it easy against Marciano ,but I feel Johnson could match him inside for strength ,he man handled an admittedly past it Jeffries,,and at 37 was still too much for the huge Willard in the first 20 rds,no one matches stamina with Rocky ,but Johnsons best punch his right uppercut could be very effective against a short crouching fighter, and he may well have damaged Rockys eye brow tissue,Marciano could end it if he landed his big bomb ,my guess is Jack would have the savy to frustrate and nullify Marcianos work, but a torrid nights work for Johnson before he takes a dec.
