I think so, too. Beating Langford at 155 pounds and not even knocking him out over 15 rounds does not show me that he can beat Marciano. Johnson lets his guys come in at them and wrestles them. Bad idea against Marciano. Marciano is a much better puncher than anyone Johnson ever faced, bigger than 95% of his opponents, and he'll match Johnson in terms of strength on the inside. Stamina is no problem either. Marciano fed on skilled boxers like Walcott (2x KO), Charles (1 UD 1 KO), Moore (KO), LaStarza (1 UD 1 KO). On the other hand, Johnson lost to a mediocre pressure fighter in Marvin Hart (mediocre compared to Marciano). While the decision may have been racially biased, he failed to keep Hart away from him. The same Hart who has been stopped numerous of times, there's little chance he's gonna stop the iron chinned Marciano. I think Marciano will knock him out between the 8th and the 10th. Johnson is not going anywhere. He fights his opponents in close. You just can't do that when you're not a huge puncher with an iron chin. Marciano has those small arms and unorthodox punches. Walcott in a documentary said that Marciano punched harder than Louis, in his opinion.
Johnson fought many men bigger than marciano ,in fact many men bigger than himself ,Marciano never weighed over 189 in a title defence, and his heaviest chalenger was a fat Cockell at 205 and a 39 year old Walcott at 1973/4.Johnson met and defeated Klondike a
Joe Jeannette weighed up and over 200 but I don't know what his weights were in his many battles with Johnson. Certainly he's a great fighter.
Hank Griffin 6 1 215 Ed Martin 6 31/2 203 Marvin Hart 6 200 Jim Johnson 6 3 240 Joe Jeanette 5 10 1/2 185- 205 Frank Moran 6 205 Jess Willard 6 61/4 226
Which good HW´s I meant near the class of Marciano. Hart weighed 182 lbs against Johnson, that´s a thing I surely know. Jeanette weighed early in his career also less than you wrote, but that´s not important, Joe was a very good fighter, but not yet when Johnson fought him. Moran, Johnson, Martin were nothing that special, than we could also take Bil Wilson (230 lbs) and Shkor (ca. 220 lbs) to Marciano´s list...
Jeanette weighed between 185 and 205 during his career ,I do not heve the definite weights for the fights with Johnson and if you do please show them L ,I would be interested,PS youy didnt say anything about the other 6 examples of bigger men I gave you. I know you consider Johnson overated ,I consider him underated,we will agree to differ Ive given Rocky his dues, but apart from Cockell and an old Walcott,[4 years older than Jeffries was when Johnson detroyed him]he never beat a 200 pounder as Champ, you notice I didnt include Jeffries in my list as he was not remotely in his prime, but then the same might be said by some about Rockys best opponents ,the 38 and 39 walcott ,the 40 year old Moore and the 33 year old Charles,it depends how you want to twist it doesnt it?
Of course I respect your opinion, too. Jeanette weighed 180 lbs ca. when he started his career, later he gained a few more pounds, but that was much later than the Johnson-fights. With the Jeffries-example, you must confess, that the Walcott, Charles and Moore, who fought Marciano were at least twice as good and almost peak in contrast to Jeffries, that really isn´t a good example...
Johnson would pepper Marciano with jabs and uppercuts throughout the fight. Marciano would be at a physical disadvantage in the clinches, and Johnson would be able to tie him up. johnson's hard combinations would bust up Marciano's face something awful. Johnson culd fight any pace he wanted, so Marciano's swarming is not going to trouble Johnson that much. Johnson's stamina or ability to go many rounds is just as good as Marciano's, so both men would be worn down at a similar pace. Johnson might hit the canvas somewhere in the mid rounds, but I expect him to walk away with the decision if it goes the distance, but IMO the fight would be stopped on cuts. Jack Johnson TKO 14 Rocky Marciano:good
Johnson´s hard combinations? The MW Ketchel floored him in the 12th round with a right hand, and he had his moments during their fight, and Marciano was the "HW- Ketchel" so to speak. Btw, why do you always pick Marciano to lose on cuts? He never suffered many cuts (beside the Charles-fight)...
Johnson punches harder than you think. He just had a layed-back style and was content to win decisions, he had great skills, so many times there was no need to knock his opponent out if he could easy beat the man on points. Besides that flash knockdown Ketchel had no good moments whatsoever in that fight. Johnson beat him like a child and would have cruised to a decision, but since Ketchel strayed from the script, Johnson decided to end the fight right there. Also p4p Marciano's power doesn't match Ketchel's. I don't always pick him to lose on cuts. just that people like Johnson or Ali or Holmes had that knack to cut people even who were never cut before or hard to cut, Marciano included, because his face is always hittable.:good
