I feel neutral about both guys, not a fan or hater, nor am I enough of a Johnson scholar to really gauge his abilities. So, I ask you guys, who do you think would win this prime vs. prime?
Johnson's famed defense and conditioning only prolongs the inevitable. Marciano chops down the Galveston Giant late rounds.
There is not enough tape of Johnson to say for sure. Based on records, if Chonyski can knock Johnson out and Ketchel can put him down, then Johnson's defense would have to be absolutely perfect against a brutal puncher that was capable of throwing 100 punches in the 15th round, or good night. Another thing is that Johnson fought in the straighter-upper era, and it is hard to say how he would handle the low crouch. Neither thing is saying Johnson could not win, only that he would have to be really on game. Of course I am going to say that I suspect the Rock would win, but I would not be a bit surprised if it went the other way.
Marciano KO 1, the Italian Stallion never ever looses a fight, way too much grit, prime Louis/Ali/Foreman/Holmes/Tyson/Holyfield/Bowe/Lewis all loose by KO, the Stallion cannot be denied he breaks those puzzies with his Roman will no doubt.
Probably Marciano wins. JJ's great attribute, his ability to wear guys out and to control the fight, is running headlong into Marciano's tremendous conditioning and stamina. That said they're stylistically very different and I can't really think of anybody that either faced that is quite like the other. That makes analysing the matchup somewhat challenging.
I'd go with Marciano though JJ has the style to win, so does Rocky. Plus JJ's chin makes me waver on his chances at victory.
That's true and in better shape. It depends on what rule set and what the referee allows inside imo. If Johnson is permitted to clinch and punch in close, I take him to nullify Marciano and tie him up for a decision. If the third man doesn't allow the fighters to "work their way out of clinches its an even fight in which I still pick Johnson by decision.Marciano has incessant pressure but it is measured pressure not 100 miles an hour like say Frazier.Short swarmers did not do well with Johnson.
The Choynski fight was early in Johnson's career when according to Pollack he was a super middle .If you factor in that fight you have to factor in Marciano being in danger of being stopped by175lbs Ted Lowry in their first encounter and possibly being lucky to get the dec. Also factor in Lastarza being unlucky to not get the duke in their first encounter I think we can agree Johnson is better than both Lowry and Lastarza. Fitz Corbett Jeffries Sharkey Johnson All named Choynski as the hardest hiitter they faced, so its not like he was some average banger is it?
Johnson was eighteen years old when Choyinsky knocked him out. Also, Jeffries was known for fighting out of a crouch.
Point taken but Marciano was incredibly slippery and hard to control. The trex arms and his insane strength just wouldn't allow it. A supertall super heavy like Wlad could defuse him by leaning down on him but I don't see a guy of the same height doing it. I have Marciano by late attrition KO after a close bruising fight. In other words, similar to most of his results against elite heavies.
