Lyle often had a tendency to box boxers and slug sluggers. Johnson would take him to school. Ron had good skills, mobility and stamina, but not the kind of speed necessary to compete with Jack. Nor do I think Lil' Artha' had the kind of power necessary to take Lyle out, or the temperament to try stopping Ron even if he did. Who was the biggest quality heavyweight Johnson knocked out after Jeff? Denver Ed Martin? An embryonic McVey?

John L Sullivan 5'10.5 212lbs and, totally shot Who was the biggest quality heavyweight Fitz knocked out? Gus Ruhlin 6' 22 195lbs Who was the biggest quality heavyweight Jeffries knocked out ? Gus Ruhlin 6' 2"' 200lbs the only quality heavyweight he met who was 200lbs.And he retired between rounds. Mcvey was 207lbs to Johnson's 190lbs . With the exception of Corbett beating up a completely washed up Sullivan ,none of the champs preceding Johnson ever beat a quality man of 207lbs. If you look up the averages of the weights of the challengers each of these champs met, you will find Johnson comes out easily the highest. I posted them recently
I realize this. I simply wanted to point out that Ron was bigger than anybody of quality Johnson knocked out aside from a dormant Jeff. If he'd stopped Moran, Willard (who he tried mightily to take out), Cowler, Lester, Battling Jim Johnson, or somebody else of similar size and prime inside the classic championship distance, then I might feel more comfortable taking Jack via stoppage. But yes, he absolutely proved he could dominate a modern sized HW over 15 rounds, and one need not be as big as he to do the trick, as Jerry Quarry demonstrated. A shutout for Lil' Artha' is very plausible here.
I think Lyle is too slow . Too slow to outpoint Johnson and, too slow to catch him with a big shot and, put him on ***** street. As Ali had Lyle dressed up in his pyjamas ready for bed, I think Johnson might do the same ,but I doubt he would abandon his safety first, lazy style long enough to close the show.
Lyle's losses to Quarry and especially Young had everything to do with him not being clever enough or experienced enough to compete on even terms against men who had boxed from since a very young age. Taking up boxing in prison while in your late 20's is giving away a big handicap to more experienced boxers. If Johnson can live up to his reputation against a more modern but in essence still a relatively crude competitor, he should be able to win a decision. Lyle had all the physicality and was fairly well-schooled in punching technique and defense but he could not always implement his techniques in the ring against live opponents who knew the answers to his moves. For example Lyle was completely befuddled when the seemingly weaker Young could maneuver the seemingly stronger Lyle at will in the clinches, tying him up whenever Lyle attempted to trade blows, holding and hitting as well as finding room to land short punches in close. Sound familiar? That was one of Jack Johnson's specialities.
I'm not Johnson's biggest fan, but, come on, now. Lyle was a good, strong contender but these guys don't live in the same neighborhood. Setting up a match where one guy starts out with only a fluke puncher's chance isn't going to yield the most interesting results. :rofl

Jack could win virtually every round. I would n't rule out Ron scoring a flash knockdown somewhere along the the line though. After all,if Stanley Ketchel,a middlewieight,could do it.............
