Jack Johnson vs. Stanley Ketchel

I've 4 books on Johnson and have never read this.
Jack Johnson is on record as stating nobody hit him as hard as Joe Choynski who was also the man Jim Jeffries named as hitting him the hardest.

 

A rehearsal took place in Willis Britt’s room according to George Little. This is covered in a 6 page feature on the fight in the Dec 2021 edition of Boxing News by Carlos Acevedo. Piling pillows on the floor, the boxers went over the routine a few times. Mentions Ketchel’s misgivings as a bad actor and the crap game after the fight.
On another note, Johnson’s fight camp at Seal Rock House, features in Don Siegel’s The Lineup with Eli Wallach. Watched it on YouTube. The latter part of the film takes place there, in the 1958 crime film.

 

It should perhaps be borne in mind that Johnson and Little were estranged by fight time.

 

I’ve a few books on Johnson. Currently reading America on the Ropes. Photo of Little on P99, saying after a row over Etta Duryea, Little challenged JK to a duel with pistols!
Ended up in the courts where Little likened managing Johnson. to Barnum handling Jumbo, and he was “handling this elephant.” Upshot, Johnson fired him less than a month before the Jeffries fight. Little, after settling various claims faded away, bitter about his firing. Jack hired a temporary manager, Tom Flanagan, until 5th July.

I like watching this fight. Weirdly enough. I like to see these guys move on the screen and realize how privileged we are these days. The KD was as legit as it comes in my book the story of the fight was easy to follow in my head Stan and Jack are buddies who want to make money Stan knew his ceiling and decided to ask as a friend "Hey Jack let's get paid and no one gets hurt" And who would Jack be to turn down easy money and be a good friend? Well Stan sees his shot, "no hard feelings Jackie boy"... Unfortunately Uncle Jack isn't a middleweight and makes Stan swallow his teeth for making a fool of him Infront of so many people- do I blame him for blowing out his friend like that? no, people still hold that KD against him as an indication that he's "an overrated dinosaur" lol
