Obama does what's politically expedient for him when he had to win an election. He did anything but distance himself from Rev. Wright. Rev Wright has visited the White House several times since Obama has been in office. I listed my reasons why he might pardon Johnson. We'll see. As for McCain, he's an old man has been flip-flopper.
It's just not a balanced argument. If you're seeking reasons to make this a special interest case for Obama, that's easy to do. But if you're seeking the truth, which requires a balanced approach to the topic, that's a lot harder to do. And I think you're off.
Reznick, Most pardon's are given for politically motivated reasons. Agreed? Obama's shoot first aim later mouth in areas where the police and law were later proven correct in three major cases was telling. Obama incorrectly thought there was racial injustice. He would have been much better suited to wait for facts, rather than base his snap judgement on race which made things worse, not better. Can you see a path for the Johnson pardon now? If you understand where the man is from, and who his old friends are, I can see a path for the pardon happening. I'm not saying it will happen, I'm saying I could see why he would do it. It really doesn't make much of a difference. Johnson will always be a lawless punk who beat on women and the sick. He had trouble everywhere he went, and would likely have been locked up in today's world with similar behaviors.
Why can't the reason be "Obama might pardon him, because it helps correct an injustice committed by the government?" Why go down this complex rabbit hole of looking for reasons to make the a disingenuous deed? It's not realistic. Obama has never even commented on pardoning Jack Johnson, yet you already have a laundry list of reasons on his true motivations for doing something he hasn't even done yet? It's off base. Obama is a real guy. He's pardoned people that nobody has heard of for serving excessive sentences for dealing drugs. That's not the most politically boosting thing to do. Also, do you live in America? Because it's pretty much common knowledge that black people here are treated far worse in the justice system than white people, in general. It's statistically proven.
It comes down the question of whether there would be provision to pardon Jack Johnson, if the moral case could be made. I submit that there would be.
Richard Nixon was pardoned before he was even charged with any crime. There are common practices, like Bill mentioned. But the US President can pardon whomever they want.
Will Revolver ever be pardoned for his crimes against the Classic Forum? Even if he expresses extreme remorse?
You are the one creating the rabbit hole you profess to want to avoid by saying the government did an injustice to johnson. That is nothing more than your 21st century OPINION. I say again, if you pardon johnson then pardon all the people who were far less guilty under the letter of the law. The fact is that no one here would be discussing this if Johnson werent A. a boxer and B. Black. Otherwise where is all of this righteous indignation for the others harrassed under and convicted using the mann act. Or does your twisted sense of justice only extend as far as the boundaries of your favorite sport?
