I think that Jack Johnson had a very impressive run as the coloured heavyweight champion. He defeated all of the best black fighters of his day, something that white champions did not have to do, and then won the lineal heavyweight title. When we combine Johnson's two reigns as both the coloured champion and the lineal champion, it collectively makes for a very impressive career in my opinion.
Prety impresive really. I think Johnsons legacy rests primarily on his reign as coloured hevyweight champion. If you look at the number of top fighters he fought and the frequency with which he fought them it is prety crazy.
I think that the Sam McVea that Johnson beat could be compared to the Tim Witherspoon that Larry Holmes beat. No doubt about the outcome however.
really hard to say. wins over jeanette, langford etc look impressive, but since there is no footage on these guys its hard to say. some of the fights were not on the level back then. the black heavies of the day all knew eachother well and depended on eachother to make money since they couldnt fight for the title.
The Langford he defeated was a 20 year old outweighed by 40 pounds. Johnson never faced him after he had physically matured.
Just saying he was 20 is misleading. He wasn't as unexperienced as a 20 year old fighter would be today, for starters.
johnson wasnt matured he was only 180lb when he fought langford. not the grown up hulking 205lb later in his career
By the time jeanette lost to Johnson for the last time he was nearly 28 and had 22 fights, hardly a novice.
Sam McVea had at least two fights that are not recorded on boxrec prior to his first recorded fight and might have had more. He was fighting in Australia before his first recorded fight which in itself suggests that he was not a novice. While Johnson did not beat the best versions of Langford, Jeanette and McVea they were still prety good versions.
