Jack Johnson's Power ???

Id say he had power on par with Jeffries.

 

I think he hits about as hard as an Ali, probably not as hard as a jeffries, but still pretty hard. When he hits you, you are going to hurt.

Incidentally, that is an amazing picture of Godfrey Johnson. Johnson looks to be the bigger fighter. How do their stats compare. I have always thought that Johnson looked a lot bigger than his stats quote.

 

Johnson was probably on par with a Larry Holmes in power. Not overly wicked per punch, but highly repsectable in terms of not wanting to get nailed by the punch.. Johnson, like Holmes, put dog's away with a volume of well placed shots...

He hits harder than you all give him credit for, he's not very aggressive but when he lays it on an opponent he does damage. See Ketchell, toying with him, he gets floored, then gets up and puts him away with 1 punch. Against Burns you can see he turns over and swings into his punches more so than the likes of Holmes/Ali andh is uppercut is a very deadly powerpunch. He also stopped Jeffries something someone like Fitz couldn't do

 

Yeah, But Ketchel and Burns were small fries..... Great fighters for dude's 160 to 180 pounds, but not monster heavies by no means..... J.J. is suppose to park them mutha's...

I wish I new more of Godfrey........ G.G. had the size, strength and power in the 1920s to be the man, but politricks and poor management held him back.... PLUS! I read he loved to chow down and balloon upward during his off time from the ring.... He died around the mid-40s in his middle 40s of diabetes / stroke if memory serves me right.... He needed a better doctor and care....

I do wonder how many heavyweights could have demolished Ketchell the way he did.

This is not a guy who was just crumbling before the power when he stepped up to heavyweight.

 

Still, who knows how legit that '09 fight in Colma, Ca. was??????????? Word has it, J.J. agreed to carry Ketchel so the fans got their monies worth.... The bout seems to have been slated for a fixed exhibition more so than a real fight..... Their is a rumor that Ketchel decided to cross Johnson and go for the kill, which led to his own demise.......... Who ****in' knows for sure???

Yes, Jack did wipe away some of Stan's teeth after he parked his ass in round 12 but, in 1909 boxing mouthpieces were gay and basically consisted of a wool cloth wrapped around the tongue to keep a man from biting through the organ.... They didn't protect the teeth all the good......

That doesn't negate the fact the the mouthpiece was little more than a wool / leather strap wrapped around the tongue in 1909....... Teeth protection was minimal... TRUTH!

He was not a Foreman type puncher, but a lot harder than say an Ali or a Holmes who both have big punches (when they're used).

Ali had a very hard punch, but he rarely planted his feet down to land it. But when he did, it could put people away. Johnson hit hard. Harder than Ali.
