The only person who wanted Johnson Smith was Johnson.

Indeed he perhaps looked at Gunboat Smith as a tool for circumventing Langford. He pressed hard for the fight after Smith beat Langford.

Johnson beat Moran in June 1914. In 1914 Smith beat Pelkey for the "White "title in 15 rds ,then he lost it to Carpentier,on a foul in 6 Carpentier dropped him for an 8 count in the 1st rd ,with a punch that took Smith 2 rds to get over,in his own words,in Oct in a rematch with Langford Smith is kod in 3 rds,so you could say he eliminated himself,he had lost his "White"title , and been kod in 3 in the Langford rematch.
Smith said in 1914 he began to slide,in his own words "In 1914 I began to slip. After I fought Langford and Willard, then I begin to slip.I lost that certain something.I wasnt right".So by Smiths own admission he was on the slide in 1914,his only significant win was over Pelkey who was flattered by his ko over the tragic McCarty,Smith was beaten in his Major fights of that year after his sole win over Pelkey..

It must be obvious to everyone on the board that Mendoza is an irrational one-man Jack Johnson hate machine?

It's getting to the points where his arguments no longer make any sense, or only if you overlook certain facts, I don't know why you guys still bother with him, he's hardly objective in his analysis.

I call it like it is. What we have here is a select few crotch jockeys who can't accept the facts that Johnson ducked the best competition, got lucky to keep his title in at least one fight and , lied / made excuses as to why he did not do well.

Bottom line. Smith did enough to warrant a title shot before 1914. He also hurt Johnson in a sparring session. Simply stated, Smith was better than the anyone Johnson gave title shots to. So he lost on a foul. Big deal. There was some debate as to who wins if there was not DQ. Perhaps Gunbaot gets to him later. Read the review:

Johnson also lost on a foul. Does that mean anything to you?

Smith might have been Ko'd by Langford, but he also got the better of a prime Sam Langford which is something Johnson never did because he ducked him!

You keep on about Smith hurting Johnson during a sparring session,at one point you even claimed he kod Jack ,listen Sparring is Sparring ,it isnt fighting for real,Smith said he put Johnson through the ropes when he was sparring with him for the Ketchel fight,he didn't say he hurt him ,dazed him or anything like it.Toxie Hall dropped Marciano during sparring Greg Page dropped Tyson should they have gotten title shots on that basis?
As to the Smith Carpentier fight ,I have Smith's own account of the fight recorded on tape in 1970 ,where he admits Carpentier really hurt him in the first round dropping him for an 8 count ,and that he had to stall his way through 2 rds to recover his senses,at that time Carpentier was just 20 and still a growing fighter. It seems more and more posters are catching on to you Dr Mendoza, your bias and hatred has become so blatant you are fast becoming the forums "joke" A word of advice ,on other subjects you write rational and objective posts ,why don't you confine yourself to them ,before posters stop responding to your hate mail ,as Sizzle has suggested?

Just read your bible the NY Times review, nowhere in it do I see a round that Smith won,the paper said he was outclassed and twice narrowly escaped defeat and this from a still maturing 20 year old ,I have Carpentiers own account of this fight and also Smith's ,Ill take them over an American paper when the fight was held in London!

There are some very revealing posts on this thread which would be invaluable for anyone attempting to assess the objectivity of certain posters on the subject of Jack Johnson.LOL

I'll content myself with that observation, for now.
