Just popped up on my facebook page courtesy of "The London ex Boxers Association". Thought it might be of interest on here. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae_yky14xtI[/ame]
Yeah this appeared on my Youtube the other day. I really liked the ending when he & Arcel met up. A great find by whoever found it.
Al ,I want to thank you so much for this clip of Jackie Kid Berg, who my dad saw whenever he fought in New York. Watching this program brought tears to me eyes,as Kid Berg was one of my dad's favorite fighters...Thanks again A....:good
Glad you enjoyed it Burt. I just watched it again for the first time in twenty five years. My dad was friends with Jack, in fact it was Jack who introduced my dad to Jack Dempsey just after he won the British title.. A memory that I know my dad treasured.
I've seen that. It is absolutely insane. His old pals randomly watching the kids scrap in the street. The stunt man attacking him with a sword. And best of all, a clearly alarmed Berg asking Frank Bruno where he got the Championship Belt the ex-fighter keeps locked in a safe to which Bruno replies, "I've nicked it!"
A, i was particularly moved when Ray Arcel appeared on the program.. I would see Arcel quite often at Stillman's gym plying his trade, alongst with Whitey Bimstein. Arcel ALWAYS said that Kid Berg was one of his very favorite boxers Arcel trained. He LOVED Jackie Kid Berg for his courage non-stop attack...Now if I could only get This Is Your Life, with Ralph Edwards, showing the lives of Jack Dempsey, Mickey Walker, and Joe Louis all three episodes that I saw originally on tv in the 1950s...They are available, but I can't seem to get them on my youtube...Shucks...
Al, I watched "This Is Your Life" every week for many many years. My favorite tear jerking program.I recall in the dempsey segment they flew in the wealthy Wild Bull of The Pampas from Argentina, Luis Angel Firpo and if memory serves me his old time manager Jack Kearns, and Gene Tunney. My dad who was a tough guy was very sentimental watching this program and the Mickey Walker and Joe Louis programs...I would love to buy these segments of This Is Your Life, but I don't know how to obtain them... Mickey Walker was one of my dad's idols. When in my teens my dad took me into Mickey Walker's gin joint across the street from the old MSG on 8th Ave, where I saw the great Toy Bulldog behind the bar hosting some patrons. My dad loved the Toy Bulldog who flattened Brit Tommy Milligan in London 1927. But Mickey absorbed quite a shellacking at the hands of who else, but the amazing fading Harry Greb in 1925. Cheers Al...
