I'll be the first to admit I'm not an expert on oldtime fighters, I've read quite alot on Berg but what little I've seen of him has been on Youtube (Its my only source I'm afraid) but its seems to me he often gets overlooked in the pantheon of boxing greats. His resume is pretty deep, he boasts wins over Tony Canzoneri, Kid Chocolate x2, Billy Petrolle, Joe Glick x2 and Mushy Callahan, not bad. I guess my question is, is he a top 100 ATG and if so approximately where should he be ranked? I know some people dislike rankings and such so you dont have to do that just let me know how you rate him as a fighter if you know a little bit about him. Cheers.
Within the 40-50 range, top 5 British. The guy was **** hot, and was a big star in the U.S for a British fighter. I feel he was probably at his best around ten stone. He could be hurt and wasn't much of a puncher himself, but there's no shame in getting starched by Canzoneri. The wins over Chocolate are very impressive IMO
Sounds good. I think 40-50 sounds about right, I doubt many people would have him that high though which is unfair. Chocolate was on some winning streak when Berg beat him, I dont think he gets enough credit for that.
He was a very good fighter in a great era got some amazing win but lacked consitancy IMO and was limited technically, still a very good fighter.
Most of Chocolate's losses to top flight opposition are pretty controversial, the Berg fights being among them. I've seen his first bout with Canzoneri (in which he officially lost the decision) and feel Chocolate deserved the verdict, personally. Can't really say with the Berg fights as I haven't seen them.
berg was a great fighter and i am not biased i dont think he was that inconstant he just burnt the candle at both ends if you put that together with his fight schedule and his huge workrate then his prime was always going to be pretty short:thumbsup
I guess it just depends on what you prefer. I'm not saying it was a robbery by any means. It was a very close fight, I just preferred Chocolate's methods. I didn't even score it to be honest, I just came away with the conclusion that Chocolate got the better of it.
That's basically the way I see, although as someone else said, I wouldn't say he was "inconsistent" as much as he simply burned out quickly. He had an impressive run of wins in a relatively short span of time, but then had his limitations exposed in his rematch with Canzoneri and never was the same afterward.
same here I thought Chocolate controlled the ring but Canzoneri controlled the pace. I also thought Canzoneri in the later rounds did better scoring as he crowded Chocolate, but early on Chocolate was very impressive especially his movement and defence but also his iniative. Kinda reminded me of Luis Manuel Rodriguez. I think he had a good run but even then he had afew losses i do think he was inconsistant and it didnt help he burnt out quick
