Towards the end of the article.

Loew spoke with a mixture of pride and frustration. For 20 years, Loew and his wife both worked full-time jobs, pouring their own money into the gym. They paid the bills, financed the trips to amateur boxing shows and never complained.
When Pavlik became champion, it was back payment for Loew’s time and effort but it also presented a chance to do even more. That’s what this new gym is about.
Loew doesn’t charge dues for amateur fighters; their only expense is the $35 annual registration fee.
“I’ve never charged a kid in my life and just because I have a lot of overhead now, I’m not going to start,” said Loew.

I read that article from The Vindicator. It sounds like things are going well with the new gym, and like Jack Leow is really into working with these kids.

He has a good team. I saw them at a tournament in 2008 and he had at least one kid, a 141 pounder I think, in the finals.

Every once and a while they interview Jack for the local media and he talks about the team some. Problem with amature events, I never hear about them until it is too late to make plans or they seem to be all day events/tournaments.

What might work, if his new place has the room, would be for him to have monthly exhibitions. No judges, just a ref. Three hour maximum time. Gate fee and some basic concessions to raise money. I think the key would be to stick to a monthly schedule so folks know WHEN it is happening and could plan accordingly. From here you could try to draw contestants from Cleveland and Pittsburg to insure the quality. I think Jacks standing in the boxing community would draw the right boxers.

How would it be different from a sparring session?

Yup, and there are 3 brothers in particular, sorry I can't think of their names right off, but they are looking to be the goods.

Jack has a world champion, he doesn't HAVE to do this stuff, but he loves the sport, loves teaching, and he damned sure loves to build kids from the street into WINNERS.

Here's some interesting stuff and a little about his team. P.s. Look at pics of Pavlik working with the "new generation" too.:good

Jack Loew has done his community and his family quite proud, and this is also why you'd never see Pavlik hear of any of this "need a new trainer" horse ****.:deal

he sounds like a good guy...amateur boxing is full of these types of guys..who put their energy and time into helping the local community and get nothing in return[moneywise that is] only the satisfaction that they might have steered a kid away from a life of crime and on to becoming a more productive member of society

Very well put, sir. And you can be sure that this is the type of man that Jack Loew is. One can only imagine the strain it put on Jack and his wife and family to try to do so much for kids, while also trying to survive in this economy as a self employed contractor. (I know this all too well from my own struggles)

Yet he does it, because he loves it, and he loves to turn kids into winners and give them reasons to be proud of themselves.

Go Jack Loew, and Go Team Pavlik!!!

P.s. click on events and schedules to get a good look at some of the future defenders of Youngstown.

If only there were another 1,000 guys in boxing like Jack who could bring more kids into the sport. I think any kind of physical activity for kids today is needed for the obesity problem in America today and the lack of physical education or recess in our schools

Fine points, sir. With the depressing news of Boxing gyms closing down all over the country, atleast we know we have Jack up in Youngstown, putting all he has into not only staying in the game, but updating his facitlites.

Yeah he should be able to update his facilites now that he has a champ under his roof, I wonder what he gets paid for a big fight training someone like Kelly

Charging an admission, having a crowd, and having a ref. If you're going to do that you might as well just have a monthly show that's sanctioned to get the kids the experience and bouts in their books.

I was strictly looking at it from a cost perspective. Start as small as possible just to try and get a regularly scheduled event off of the ground. I really don't know anything about the logistics, like how much you would have to pay a ref/judges etc.... Not like I think there would be a lot of room in his new gym for spectators or if the fire marshal would even let it happen.
