Vincenzo Gualteri vs. Alexander Pavlov, 10 rounds @ middleweight

 

Round 1

Gualteri circles right and jabs up at Pavlov from a crouch. Pavlov obligingly remains in the role of taller/longer boxer, throwing mostly jab-feints and then stabbing downward from up by his shoulder with the right. Both men nicking each other with power shots, the descending Pavlov straight right and then knee-sprung Gualteri left hook both grazing. Jab connects edged by Gualteri despite his disadvantage in height and reach, staying in Pavlov's chest.

Round 2

Gualteri trapping Pavlov's jabs between his wrists to catch them and then snapping out a 1-2 as Pavlov is retracting and leaning back to stand at full height. Gualteri finding him with that lunging right cross just beneath the chin, repeatedly. Pavlov is winging left hooks as he circles, brushing Gualteri's hairline with them or whiffing outright. A trickle of long down-thrust jabs on the chest by Pavlov but he's mostly still getting outlanded in the jab dept.

Pavlov technically has more of a "puncher's record" (10-0 with 8 kayos, 80% - contrast with Gualteri's 14-0 with 7 kayos, 50%) but seems to have been the more bothered in exchanges.

Both are taking a big step up in class versus each other.

 

Third was closer in terms of connects, output, and quality - but Gualteri cruises on, 30-27.

 

Really heated up in the fourth...Pavlov found success with a high fake-out jab to divert attention from a torpedo right on the belt line, but Gualteri busted out some hands-down rubber-neck slickness, working accurate counters after dazzling Pavlov with head movement. Pavlov spun around, maybe slightly hurt just before the bell?
