Yeah, because Foreman won the Olympics because he couldn´t box. Foreman could box, he was not a boxer type but he could box.
You took a 180 degree turn there. I thought you were rather impressed by Sharkey and him being the first real skilled 200 pounder and all that.
Janitor i value your opinion on just how good do you think max could have been, for all his **** ups hes one of my fav fighters ever, the youtube footage of his kos look even now brutal, sad he screwed around so much, do you put it down to his killing a boxer when he was younger and thus lost the killer instinct or is it just the way the guy was, you know one of those people who are good at something but sadly never push there abilitys to the limit ?
BIG DEE HERE= Like the man said it depends who the hell shows up on both sides. If a serious Baer shows up it could be a long night for Sharkey but a serious Sharkey gives Baer a boxing lesson as he did others when he was damn serious about winning. He won the second Schmeling fight no matter what the judges said and in the first fight he whipped Schmeling big-time untill the big dive by Schmeling which was the biggest acting job in ring history. IF NOT BAER KOs HIM EARLY BY THE THIRD ROUND LANDING A BIG OVERHAND RIGHT OVER THE TOP OF SHARKEYS LEFT JAB.
That´s BS, watch the fight: [YT]w4PS02UbBMo[/YT] If that punch wasn´t low I don´t know if there was any low blow in the history of the sport.
You are I think rather harsh on Sharkey. 1. He carried his hands low--yes, as did many fighters before him and after him who were quite successful. 2. He possessed no head movement, no upper body movement--He actually ducked very low on occasion. Can't really agree with these two. 3. His footwork was sloppy, he lacked fluidness--I think he had well above average movement, myself. Don't really know what you are talking about here. 4. He was featherfisted, one-armed fighter--For a champion, Sharkey did not have much of a punch, although the consistent quality of his opposition may have pulled down his KO percentage. He did show an occasional KO punch against Loughran, Delaney, and Maloney. It is fair to say he did not have a big punch. One-armed fighter--On film Sharkey shows a left jab and hook, a right cross and a sweeping overhand right, and a right uppercut. I think it is crazy to call him a one-armed fighter. 5. His defense was leaky--I think he was well above average in this department due to his foot movement. 6. His biggest weakness, in my judgement, might have been his chin. He was ko'd four times, and was lucky he was not stopped by Maloney in a fight in which he was down six times in the 8th & 9th rounds but lucked out on a foul. One point I would make about Sharkey--he fought them all. No one consistently fought better opposition. He had 55 fights. As far as I can tell, 41 of them were against men who appeared in the Ring yearly rankings, and a few others, such as Floyd Johnson and Homer Smith, probably would have been rated if there were ratings prior to 1924. He was in against the world class Floyd Johnson in his 6th fight. He had ten fights in his second active year as a fighter, 1925, and all were against men who appeared in the Ring ratings. He was one of the few white fighters who took on top black fighters, and his record is pocked with fights against really dangerous opposition--Godfrey, Wills, Dempsey, Loughran, Schmeling, Louis. Opposition of this calibre will tend to put a few dents on your record, but Sharkey has a first class resume. How does Sharkey do with Baer? I think his movement gives Sharkey the edge more often than not, though clearly he would always be at risk from the Baer right.
I decided that the difference between suzieQ49 and myself on Jack sharkey was too great for me to bridge but then Old Fogey had a go and did a far better job than I could. I think for sure that the best Jack hands out a lesson to Max(a la Loughran) but accept that anything less than his best and Baer takes his head off. As for the Loewe blow the point was that Sharkey gave an outstanding display until the low blow(and it was low) that matches his Loughran, Wills and Dempsey performances.
Sharkey beats him by decision ... Baer is highly over rated as a fighter and even as a puncher ... he was a great character while on his best ights Sharkey was a very , very good fighter ...
Sharkey was the better boxer, no doubt, but of course, Baer had that massive power and could box when he wasn't clowning around. I take Baer by KO.

That´s for sure Sharkey dominated Schmeling in there but BIG DEE wrote Schmeling took a dive and acted like he was fouled and that´s bs.
