I think Dempsey was coming on too, his corner kept repeating "keep pounding his body ,he's weakening".

 

Didn't realize Marciano threw ball punches. Thought he threw Rabit punches.

 

Yes ive watched it numerous times. Sharkey was taking Dempsey to school. Dempsey maybe won one round. Dempsey may have landed a few body punches but they were not having an effect on the fight. Sharkey rocked dempey badly, landed all the sharp clean punches, and was on his way to a wide unanimous decision win when dempsey became dirty and cheated.

Sharkey should have got the shot at tunney, not dempsey. Dempsey should be DQed. Furthermore look at the knockout, when sharkey is on the canvas he can be seen in agonizing pain grabbing his balls. That referee should have been suspended.

Sharkey was well on his way to a wide unanimous decision win. 8 rounds to 2 win for Sharkey over Dempsey. Sharkey was giving him a boxing lesson.

No one mentions Sharkey was using less than legal tactics himself. He was butting, and punching Dempsey after the bell. He got what was coming to him, in my opinion.

 

I see the fight differently which is fine however I do find it interesting that you can be so certain about a foul that the camera does not properly capture and that has been disputed for 75 years ...

 

I cast a minority vote for Quarry. In my opinion Sharkey was too stiff in his back when he jabbed. Quarry would have bobbed and weaved round that jab and used his effective counter hooks. It would not have been plain sailing all the way, but Quarry by decision something like 10-5 or 9-6.

he, you are correct. Watching this fight again for the umpteenth time,I failed to see Dempsey blows landing "in the balls". Sharkey had his trunks up higher than his navel,thus any body blows to the pit of the stomache,
Sharkey complained about.In those days body punching was rampant and part of a fighter's arsenal. Dempsey,old and slow did what he HAD to do
in his plan to slow down the mentally unstable Sharkey.If all those body blows were in the lower groin,as S attests, Sharkey would have not lasted
a few rounds. Years later Sharkey did not mention any low blows attributing to his ko loss.It is what it is, a ko for the 32 year old Jack Dempsey.
P.S. almost all blows to the pit of the stomache can look borderline
depending on how high a fighter wears his trunks...Finito...Cheers he.

 

Dempsey hit Sharkey well below the belt from what I saw and it seemed like the referee was going to separate the two when Dempsey blasted him with a left hook.

The fact is that Sharkey should never have looked away from Dempsey, who was ruthless in the ring.
