Who would win between these two IF.....

    1. Each man was at his very best.

    2. Fought under the rules of the day in a 15 round title fight.

Ok, if they were both at their very best then Baer knocks Sharkey's block off in 5 rounds. Any other version of Baer gets outboxed and decisioned. The Baer that ko'ed Schmeling does it even quicker vs the Gob.

I favour Sharkey. I've never really been majorly impressed with Baer, he seems hugely reliant on his power.

    Bart stops Sharkey.

Far too much offensive majesty for Jack to stand up to him.

Yes but his power was immense, a sparring partner for both Baer and Louis said Louis had unbelievable power but Baer could kill you by mistake

I would see best Sharkey building up an early lead with his boxing ability, with Baer coming on stronger as the fight progressed. I'd pick Sharkey to win a very close decision after 15 rounds.

Sharkey was at his best in the late '20s, at the time of the Godfrey, Wills, and Dempsey (until the 7th round) fights. He was past his best when he won the championship with the unpopular decision over Schmeling. Had champion Sharkey in June 1933 defended against the Baer who earlier in the month stopped Schmeling, he would have been KO'd in the early rounds.

George Godfrey was a huge puncher and Sharkey stood up to him. Schmeling was pretty nifty, Sharkey didn't have too much issue with him. Sharkey was even doing a pretty sweet job of boxing Dempsey until the controversial ending. I just see Jack being the more rounded fighter of these two, simple as.

    1. Baer hit much harder than the two you mentioned.
    2. Sometimes the more rounded fighter doesn't win. This would be the case with Baer vs Sharkey.

Baer was a bigger puncher than Godfrey, and c'mon Dempsey at that time wasn't Dempsey with the layoff and his age his style couldn't last like that it wasn't Dempsey, yet he still got knocked out by an old Dempsey who's left had no where near it's previous power or speed

Sharkey was a brilliant boxer at his best.
It's really hard to tell how good Baer was at his best. Sure, he slaughtered Schmeling but Sharkey brought a whole different style to the table.

Prime for prime, I'd give Sharkey the edge.

If an old slow Dempsey could get him i'd give the monster punching Baer a punchers chance

Even an old Dempsey was a better boxer than Baer though.
I doubt prime Baer would knock down a Gene Tunney.

Baer would have a great puncher's chance against Sharkey, but I'd give Jack the slight edge here. :good
