I thought it was very close but that Schmeling edged it.

both men look very fit and young - Sharkey looks strong and Schmeling very fit - seems like the sneaky right hands of Max were finding a home but evenly matched - Sharkey's jab effective

close fight- edge looks like Max but the announcer felt Max was robbed

The press came down pretty heavily on Schmeling's side.

I suspect that Schmeling took it fairly clearly by the practices of the day, but that it would have been closer today.

I feel bad for Schmeling that he did not get the decision, because this could have been a game changer in his legacy.

Do you think that this edited version misses some important exchanges or something? Because if not, I think that Schmeling won it clearly. Not with ease, but clearly.

I'm a massive Sharkey fan and love his boxing. This footage is all I have seen and Schmeling edges it for me but close. Then again, I give a lot of credit for subtle skills, shifts, quick counters, angles etc, maybe too much so. Don't think it was a robbery, maybe a bad decision but as for newspaper decisions my personal experience has been that the boxing reporters I knew, hadn't a clue. A factor to be considered is that Max was peaking while Jack was receding. Their first fight which doesn't get as much air here has Jack outboxing Max until the unfortunate ending. Maybe Schmeling comes on strong but to me Sharkey was teaching him a lesson. BTW, two excellent fighters.

Must have been drab going to live fights back in the black and white days.

Sport became much more colorful from the 1960s forward. Better live entertainment experience.

The longer version plays out in the same pattern as whats shown above. It was close but I thought Max edged it.

I have always wore clothing in shades of grey black or white so I fit in well.
