Jack Twin Sullivan beat Tommy Burns for the MW title the fight before Tommy Burns beat Marvin Hart for the HW title. Sullivan would go on to be a dual LHW/HW claimant. In 1907 Sullivan won perhaps the most obscure HW title claim in history when he beat former NSC champ Jack Palmer. This was shortly after Tommy Burns draw with Jack O Brien when Tommy Burns claim was fairly weak. Sullivan followed this up by knocking out Bill Squires in a 19 round fight before losing to Kaufman in a 25 round decision. Kaufman had also beaten the other title claimant that emerged in 1907 Schreck when he knocked out Marvin Hart. Schreck was the man who Jack Twin Sullivan beat for his LHW claim in late 1905. At various weights Jack Twin Sullivan fought HW contenders 33 times. He was 7-12-14. He was only knocked out 4 times against this group. One of these was by the great Jim Coffey one of the most dangerous HWs of the early 20th century. John L Sullivan fought 5 HW contenders going 3-1-1. Now one might say "Sullivan was fighting only at HW, most of Twin Sullivans fights were at MW or LHW" But Sullivans claim started by beating either a 150 pounder or a 167 pounder depending who you ask. If I add Greenfield and Jack Burke to Sullivans list of contender wins(so 6-1-1) his heaviest win was 170 pounds. Squires was 182 and Twin Sullivan actually knocked Squires out. John L Sullivan "drew" Cardiff who was 185 and lost to Corbett who was 178. Kaufman was 195, Coffey was 202(and 6'4). Twin Sullivans(who was 5'9) heaviest recorded win was 205 pound Jim Stewart. Stewart wasn't a contender and he made no rankings but he was a good fighter going 21-8 and actually beating guys like Carl Morris, Gunboat Smith and Luther McCarthy. John L Sullivan beat 11 guys who weighed over 190 but almost all of them were debutants with a combined record of 2-20. Is John L Sullivan even the best HW with his last name? In various threads I keep alluding to how the Schreck, Gardner, Root, Hart, O Brien generation of MW/LHWs might have embarassed Jeffries if given the chance to fight him. Well if they'd beat Jeffries what would they do to Sullivan? Twin Sullivan probably was the least dangerous of this group so much as KOs go but even if he doesn't knock Sullivan out is there any reason to doubt he could put on a clinic?
