Jackson’s Mixed Martial Arts: The Stand Up Game (Ironic?)

Im looking forward to Chael Sonnen's BJJ Defence Handbook

 

People are being so reactionary about Jackson's camp being boring and never wanting to stand, it simply isn't true.

Nate Marquardt has improved his standup a lot, Donald Cerrone, Leonard Garcia, Bang Ludwig.

Melvin Guillard and Jon Jones haven't exactly turned into blankets since training with him either.

 

Maybe it's cause most people on MMA blogs and forums are ****in idiots.

 

Look at Rashad Evans, in TUF his style was almost exclusively wrestling, once he won the tournament he switched to Jacksons camp and his stand up has improved a lot.

 

Doesn't GSP train with Jackson? He's got amazing standup, if you ask me.

True. And when he lost to Machida because he got outstruck, he used his wrestling in his next too fights; seems smart to me.

True again, and while he was already a very good striker and gets a lot of his stand up training in Canada, he has gotten better as a striker while with Jackson.

 

Actually.... Greg Jackson is known for improving his fighters standup.

 

Actually, GSP said that Jackson is mainly his strategic advisor.

He usually trains his standup with Phil Nurse in NYC for most fights and, recently, worked on his boxing with Freddie Roach.

 

His stand up has improved, but I have to disagree. His fight against Chuck he circled away until Chuck inevitably dropped his guard. Great knock out, but hardly a toe to toe schooling. I guess the game plan worked but hardly entertaining.
In the Thiago fight Evans immediately pushes him against the cage takes him down and gets the mount. It was only Thiago's scramble that stopped the 1st round being a snoozefest. Evan's stand up in that fight consisted of moving his head side to side like a drunk tramp on a tug boat. Rounds 2 and 3 were basically the same if memory serves
And we've all seen what happend against Machida.
Point is Jacksons camp is quickly turning into the catenaccio of MMA. Great stragey for winning fights, and at the end of the day thats the name of the game. But at the same time, not the most entertaining

 

its not that hard to turn wrestlers who never were taught striking before into average strikers in the ufc, as for gsp's great stand up .............matt serra

 

That was 3 years and a half ago and it's 1 fight.

 

Probably why GSP will be more cautious in future fights; he knows he can get caught, whether standing up or on the ground.

 

According to your logic Anderson Silva has poor stand up since he got clipped 3 times by Sonnen.

 

Melvin has clearly lost most of the aggresion that made him an exciting prospect since moving to Jacksons. Nate wasnt exactly all action until Paul Harris left himself wide open moaning to the ref either.

I wouldnt single out Jacksons as the only gym thats looked to exploit the faults in MMA's rules/scoring but it is clearly one of the worst.
