Watched it over and over - agree with the stoppage.

Agreed. Let's say Max Baer fought Carnera today. They would have stopped the fight literally after the 2nd knockout seeing how Carnera reacted after that one. But it went on for a lot longer (11 knockdowns). That's what old boxing was all about, most fights came to their natural conclusions. Now you get a fighter who looks somewhat dazed and the referee will jump in and wave his hands. :-:)patsch:huh

This sport has turned soft - VERY soft. :deal

It was a lil premature. What's strange is that he went to tie up to try to recover and the ref immediately breaks it up. What the five? It's like the ref wanted the KO. And then when he was wobbled, ref gave him no count. It's the freaking first round. Situation seems really strange.

You and I could not be more in agreement on this MVC - refs have become so squeamish that they call fights prematurely all the time. And what is really sad - and profoundly disappointing to me every time I encounter it - is that modern boxing fans actually support this!!:patsch

In my day, boxing fans went ape-**** when a fight was stopped prematurely. They were furious that they had been robbed of the definitive conclusion they had paid to see. And that the fighters had been robbed of their chance to potentially turn it around and win.

Who knows how many great fights we have been robbed of by squeamish modern refs? It's truly sad to contemplate this.

It was a little early in my opinion but at the same time Quillen himself wasn't complaining (maybe he let out a sigh of relief that it was waved off for all we know) and I don't really think it would have made a difference in the outcome, he was getting hammered and it didn't look like a momentum shift was about to happen.

At the end of the day, I'm not sweatin it, don't really care.

I actually thought it was a great stoppage.

He was getting destroyed in there and barely protecting himself. The couple he threw back were arm punches where he specifically got countered heavily. His body language was that of a fighter about to get saved by the ref. And good thing that is what happened.
