According to ESPN sources the American and the Russian are going to square off on the undercard of Marquez - Diaz II on 31 July. Even though some hardcore fans will call the winner a paperchamp, because they still see Martinez the lineal champ at MW, I'm absolutely thrilled with this fight. I like both fighters. Jacobs got a lot of exposure on HBO undercards and has faced Ishe Smith, who is the only name known on his resume (for the casual fan at least). He's got nice ring generalship, good footwork and a pumping jab. Additionally his pop is quite decent, having a knockout ratio of 85%. At only 23 years he has a long way to go and experience-wise still has to learn. However, the chance was taken and contracts for the fight seem to be a done deal. Pirog on the other side is not known to the average fight fan in the US, but has an amazing skill set. Most of his fights can be seen on youtube and give a first glimpse on what technical level Jacobs has to expect. His footwork is extremely economical, but fits the demands. Pirog is constantly busy and doesn't give his opponent the chance to unfold much. Although he doesn't seem the one punch knockout artist, he wears his opponents down. Upperbody movement and slipping punches seem to come straight from the textbook. The sweet science in its pure beauty. Defensively he has shown some weaknesses that can be exploited by a fast opponent. Fighting mainly orthodox, the Russian also switches his stance at times. At 29 years he only has 16 fights, but also a 81.25% knockout ratio. In my opinion this matup is even and the far better fight than the main event in Las Vegas come fight night at the end of July. My heart is with Pirog, simply because his style is stunning, effective, economic and extremely beautiful.
The next generation of the Middleweight division is emerging. We've got Pirog-Jacobs and Golovkin-N'Dam N'Jikam coming up for vacant titles. The titles don't really matter but it's great that these 4 undefeated guys are all looking to fight each other :happy
Paper belt but a very solid fight. MW has some serious prospects and Pirog could cause Jacobs major problems. I'm not sold on Jacobs just yet and Pirog has some serious skills, an unusual style for a Russian fighter and a very nice punch. It's a clash of styles thing so it's not easy to foresee how it'd go down, but I think it's gonna be pretty exciting to watch.
Speaking of new MW generation, David Lemieux is headlining this Friday's FNF against Elvin Ayala. Lemieux is about 3-4 fights away of a title shot!
Hassan ndam njikam backed out of a fight with golovkin and a world title shot to fight a scrub instead.
:good can't wait friday to see this one! be prepare to see Ayala get on his bike as soon as Lemieux connect a solid one! For the Pirog-Jacobs fights it's great to give opportunity to those young boxers who are the futur of the division:good the 160 lbs division will be the one the watch in 2-3 years!
i think its just stay busy fight. Golovkin still has legal problems with his former promoter and the fight cant be done until its solved afaik. However Golovkin will beat N´Dam when it comes to the fight..
All four of those fighters would destroy the the two fighting for the IBF middleweight belt at the weekend. Very relevant exciting fights, better than most title fights at that weight. Throw in Andy Lee, David Lemieux, Matt Macklin and Fernando Guererro into the mix and you have some tasty fights over the next few years.
