Don't you think Canelo might be the one fighting a Charlo first? Jermall will be his mandatory if he beats Golovkin … whereas Munguia only fights Jermell (who isn't as good as Jermall) if he chooses to unify in that direction.
Muinguia would be smart to wait until Hurd and Jermell beat up on each other then offer a title shot to the loser and beat him up some more
Yes, I rate Munguia but he is very green. Fighting Liam Smith is a great move, and he shouldn't challenge Hurd / Jermell just yet IMHO.
I think someone forgot to tell the bookies liam smith is world cass like his brother paul. Easy money, im re morgaging my house and putting it on JM
I already see Jermell-Munguia being hyped, so I see that fight happening before Jermall-Canelo, a fight that has gotten very little to almost no hype at all. I also think that Jermell has a better shot at beating Munguia than Jermall beating Canelo.
Agreed, both are good fights but right now Jermell has the better chance. If I am Munguia, I build a bit of experience before facing Jermell, but perhaps you're right - judging by the way Munguia has been managed he might just go for it.
He should not rush. Don’t be another Fernando Vargas. Smith is a good step up but he’d be nuts to call out and seriously want the elite guys. I’d take top 10-20 guys if I were him for the next 2 years, 6 fights. Experience goes a long way and he’s super young. He doesn’t need to rush. Isn’t he 21?
Let's not overrate Munguia based on 1 good win. Yes, he's got a lot of upside, but he got caught flush a few times by Ali. He need to tighten his defenses a bit and gain more experience. I would pick Clenelo to beat Munguia right now, but maybe not a year from now. Munguia need to step up and take on the top guys at 154 before I put him up there with the elite.
I understand he is very young, but he's a world champion, and as a world champion he has obligations. It would be a disgrace if he spent his next six fights against the top 10-20. If he's going to be carefully matched as you suggest there are plenty of top 10 guys he can beat and even destroy. I would love to see him break Kell Brook's face, or a fight against Tony Harrison, or Julian Williams, and who would not love to see Amir Khan KTFO again. There are plenty top 10 guys he could beat, no need to fight complete nobodies.
Munguia needs to improve his defense. He keeps his guard to low and will be susceptible to getting hit and possibly hurt if someone hits him fast & hard on the chin/head.
if they are dead set on fast tracking him, they need to go after the guys with the least power. let him get used to top 5 speed and technique, so he learns to adjust the things he needs to adjust before facing the best puncher in the division. best thing would be to get him exposure with challenging but safe fights for at least a year, then take all the big fights you can negotiate. the kid seems to live clean and breath boxing, hes got 5 good years to sharpen that deadly edge before entering his physical prime, if he keeps learning, hes gonna own whatever division he settles in.
