LaMotta doesn't injure his shoulder and Cerdan doesn't die in a plane crash. They rematch as planned. Both are well-recovered from their original fight, and this time nobody gets shoved to the canvas. Who wins and how?

Lamotta beats him by UD. He was simply the better fighter.

My mistake, I thought he had hurt his shoulder. I read so much boxing info during the day, I must have got mixed up.

Strictly toe-to-toe, this is pretty close imo. Both were tough and strong and good let loose for a good while. Still, I have LaMotta winning as I agree, he was a better fighter.

Cerdan was a beautiful mover and had a great variety of punches.

However the best Jake had seen plenty of great movers...and he problem would have forced Cerdan to stop and exchange more than he wanted to.

I go with Lamotta timidly based on my limited visual knowledge.

So true. But Toney sucks apparently and his skill is a "myth" to some.

Actually I think there was a shoulder injury for LaMotta in training for the rematch scheduled for September 29th, which caused the fight to be re-scheduled for early December .... so Cerdan went home for a month or two and was killed on his flight back on October 28th.

Anyway, if they were both injury-free (and alive !) for the rematch I'd still give LaMotta the edge, because Cerdan was 33 years old and a fair bit further past his best than LaMotta who was still only 27.

Unless I'm mistaken, I belive it was Cerdan that hurt his shoulder.? He' was pushed or thrown to the floor and that's where said injury took place. I'm pretty sure that's the case but at work at moment so can't check it out.

I thought LaMotta had hurt his shoulder in training initially. I know in the fight that Cerdan injured his shoulder and LaMotta hurt his hand.

    Cerdan.

He had to fight one-handed for nearly all the fight. From the footage I've seen of both fighters, Cerdan impresses me more than LaMotta.

Then there's the report written by the American sportswriter Red Smith:

“In spite of his injury and in spite of a severe beating in the first round … Cerdan won the second round big and the third and fifth by lesser margins. A master at handling his opponent, turning him, tying him up, slipping or blocking his punches, and setting him up, Cerdan could do none of this one-handed. He couldn’t even stick his left out to ward off his foe … it is difficult to believe LaMotta would have a chance with a two-handed Cerdan.”
