"What do I need Burley for when I have Zivic?" is LaMotta's supposed reply when asked if he would match Burley. But Jake did match plenty of guys who were widely dodged in that era. What if he had agreed to fight Burley at the beggining of 1944? '43 had seen him beat Zivic and Robinson amogst others, so he was probably at peak, and Burley, too, was still at his best around this time, coming off wins over Wade and Chase and mixing with Cocoa Kid and Williams, both those fights failing to produce a winner. So 15 rounds, the first week of 1944, who takes it?
Well Jake is a heavy strong as hell ox who never says die and would have to stop Burley's technique from doing the talking by using his pressure. If Burley gets going, his gears mean he can start to paint a masterpiece. But i'll take Jake to not allow it enough for Burley to take a decision. This is a top class pressure fighter after all. Sorry McGrain
burley would give lamotta a boxing lesson as would ezzard charles, the difference being that charles may well have been able to hurt the bull
agreed ,but i think lamotta had good reason to avoid burley and fight welterweights robinson and zivic instead
I really do think Jake may win it, and i normally pick Burley a lot. But i can see the implications of what went on out of the ring and what didnt go on the ring at the time have given you strong feelings about a bout between Jake and Burley. I do think Burley may get it done, but i think Jake could aswell.
One thing I will defend Lamotta to the death on......Guts. Lamotta feared NO ONE, In fact he was the only white middleweight of that era who had the balls to get in the ring with not one, but many of the top black murders row. Lamotta claimed in ring magazine interview he wishes he would get more credit for taking on the top black guys no one else wanted to face. Lamotta would have fought burley, lamotta feared no one. he was as tough as they come. Lamottas prime was 1943-1946, most of the film we have available of lamotta is the weight drained past prime version. but lamotta at his peak was a beast. He could not be hurt by punches, he never got tired, he was as strong as an ox, and he was very cute in the way he could play possum. Lamotta could basically just swarm all over people and not worry about getting hurt or getting tired. But when lamotta wanted too, he was very adept defensivley, he slipped jabs very well and rolled with punches(even though he could take them). This would be a very close fight IMO. Burley would defintley score with sharp counters, but lamotta would score alot of efffective aggresion points.
Ridiculous. Lamotta feared no one. he fought top black murders row middleweights like holman williams, lloyd marshall, bert lytell, yet hes afraid of charley burley? Not to mention lamotta took on robinson 6 times.
robinson was a welter, and i'm not questioning lamottas guts. lamotta also doesn't get the credit he's due for his boxing ability but i still don't think he'd beat burley
Oh man, 'the life and hard times of an uncrowned champion' is seriously my favourite read to this day. A must.
