A hometown boxer?? He fought Lytell in Boston where Lytell was more established. He fought Williams in Detroit, Williams’ hometown, he fought Reeves in Reeves hometown, Bolden in Boldens hometown, he fought Zivic twice in his hometown and another time on neutral territory in Detroit, he fought Harris in Pittsburgh and Detroit, he fought Marshall in Marshalls hometown, he fought Costner in Chicago, he fought Satterfield in Satterfields hometown, he fought Bell in Bell’s hometown, he fought Raadik in Raadiks hometown, he fought Dauthille a frenchman in french speaking Quebec, he fought DeJohn in Dejohns hometown, he fought Hunter in Hunters hometown, he fought Hays in Hays hometown. If anything LaMottas record is remarkable for his willingness to fight tough competition and hometown favorites on their turf. Typically when he fought in his hometown he was fighting another New Yorker, particularly in big fights against guys like Robinson, Basora, etc You might be surprised to know that of Briscoes 96 fights 29 were fought outside of Philadelphia. 62 of LaMottas 106 fights were fought outside of the major metropolitan New York area. So who was the hometown fighter now?
It's not a myth at all. Briscoe was at best a very good fighter, LaMotta was a great one. Show me any lists where Briscoe is rated above Jake? LaMotta is edgeof the 10 while Bad Bennie is outside the 50. Defaulting back to but this is H2H is largely irrelevant as LaMotta fought in a way stronger era. I'm not convinced Jake "ducked" Burley. He fought some of the murders row and wasn't exactly fragile minded. His resume is full of quality and toughness. So what if he spoke unfavorably. He was probably trying to big up himself with a view to the future. Regardless Marshall is a far better fighter than Briscoe. He's quite likely a top 30 middleweight. This really isn't taking you to where you want to be. The bottom line is Jake beat Cerdan. Sure there's an asterix but i'm certainly not going to gift the fight to Cerdan. Which still doesn't mean Briscoe beats him. Do you think LaMotta was at the peak of his career at this point? Willemain was a fine fighter btw. Gotta love them come from behind ko's - the thing of greatness. Again this is late career for LaMotta. No doubt. Zivic is a great fighter. I'm starting to think Jake never won a just decision in his life A still dangerous extremely great fighter. Your breakdown was about as negative as one could possibly be.
I'd hardly be pulling that out of the woodwork. Monzon was years away from his title winning quality and drawing with every man and his dog under the Argentinian scoring system. To say that LaMotta hasn't got anything to compare with that is quite frankly absurd.
I really like this fight, two brutes with good skills. Briscoe has the Qawi-esc head-movement, strength and power to chug along and make life hell for anyone. Jake, for all the talk of a master defence, wasn't actually that hard to hit. Sure, he rolled with shots well and took some of the sting out of them, but even at the time it was said he wasn't hard to hit. Either way, both men are made of granite and neither's getting stopped. I think the big factor here, is LaMotta's left hand. He created openings, shut down offence and set himself up with it, went downstairs and came up with hooks. Bennie's game though, he hits like a monster truck. I don't think he'd do any more than rattle Jake in a fight, but he has the power to stop The Bronx Bull from getting to Gung-ho. Competitive, fun fight, but Jake wins fairly clearly. He's just a class above.
Not got a patch on you know who.... Yeah, Marshall is an absolute beast. Similar to Roy, but uses his legs a bit more, with awesome timing and an awesome lead hand. Looks like a real problem TBH. Makes you wonder just how good Holman Williams was, considering he's often sited as the best of the group, and almost always over Marshall. Not to mention beating him.
