Jake LaMotta vs Carlos Monzon (15 rounder)

But remember the first Carlos Monzon vs Bennie Briscoe bout was in 1967, they fought to a 10 round draw before Monzon won the the title from Nino Benvenuti in Nov 1970. On Nov 11 1972, Carlos looked impressive in scoring a unanimous 15 round decision over Briscoe, Monzon proved he could take a punch in the 9th round when Bennie landed that booming right hand that staggered Carlos, who withstood it and completed the round.

 

I love Jake but may risk the wrath of many when I say he may be slightly overrated based on the film .. of course he was tough as hell, a hell of a fighter and crazy gutsy and could absolutely fight but when you look at his record and all those fights against the black fighters everyone else ducked , almost all were over blown welters and small middleweights or he lost .. even Robinson, exceptional, fought LaMotta with huge weight disadvantages in almost every fight .. Jake when conditioned was very strong, very tough, had decent not terrific power and an iron chin .. His biggest problem was to make 160 was murder for him and he was weakened .. today without question he'd be at 168 , the best division for him as he was too small for light heavy .. Monzon was a big middleweight and poses a different set of challenges than Robinson .. I think the best version of Jake could give Carlos a hell of a fight as he would make Carlos fight at a serious pace, not lay back and dictate it himself .. He did not have the punch of Briscoe but I feel he was a much better fighter ... the end of the day Carlos by close decision .. tough bout ..

I love Jake too, a great fighter & skilful too, beyond his toughness, but he is overrated thanks to the movie and at the hands of many a Welter, namely Robert Villemain - the Proof Fighter.

Proof that the TOP, again TOP, Non American fighters, given the chance are as good, or in some cases better than the predominant Americans, namely from the outside LEADING Nations, Auz, Brit, Europe, Canada and so on.

There's a BIG Bad World out there and many, many a TOP Fighter never got near - Logistics, Circumstances, Corruption, Politics, War and just straight out avoidance - corruption.

anyway, Monzon.

 

Carlos would beat Jake very convincingly. Too skilled and he equaled La Motta in toughness. The Bull would still be standing at the end though.

 

This,,,,Jake just doesn't have the firepower to constantly engage with Monzon as his chin was iron too.
