It depends on the time machine and years this fight takes place.... In 1989, Roberto Duran was well trained and strong at 156 3/4 pounds when he beat and nearly KO'd Iran Barkley who was a stripped 159 pound Middleweight... In 1989, Barkley was still strong at 160 pounds, and Barkley did fight a well disciplined bout against Duran..... That version of Duran was very capable of beating the weakend version od Jake LaMotta at 160 pounds who was trying to defend his title against Ray Robinson in 1951..... I think LaMotta was done as a Middleweight after 1949.. But since the 168 lb. division did not exist back then, Jake LaMotta was forced to strain rather than gain weight and go up to 175........ However, at 160, in 1949, LaMotta wins....... Anything below 155 is all Duran..... Peace...

Yes but the more LaMotta pressures the more he is open to Duran's counter rights and check hooks.

 

Even as clever as one might want to argue LaMotta was, underrated ring general, whatever, stylistically this is not good for him, its obvious the issue here is size, natural size etc. I just cant give Roberto the win in this given the overall evidence at 160 on him, and LaMotta is a genuine great fighter in this division's history. Has to be Jake, that's mine.

But Marvin Hagler was a very strong middleweight, and he didn't walk through Duran. Duran showed just enough skill in their fight to last the distance and give a good account of himself, even though he lost.

LaMotta was not anywhere near as good as Hagler. My guess is that a motivated, well prepared Duran exhibits just enough savvy and counterpunching skill to beat Jake by a close decision.

Duran was one of history's all-time great fighters. I think his greatness would have compensated for his physical disadvantages vis-a-vis LaMotta.

Anyway you cut it up, though, it would have been a close and very competitive fight.

 

Yeah. I think LaMotta might call and raise Duran on being a *******. I doubt if Duran wins this one on intimidation.

By the way, Gene Fullmer would probably defeat Duran by butting, hitting low, hitting after the bell, etc, with foul piling on foul, and then give 25% of his purse to the church and sing in the choir on Sunday.

 

Sure but it wouldn´t bother LaMotta much, he would bully Duran and shove him on the backfoot. LaMotta´s mix of strength, size, workrate, defence and chin is too much for Duran at mw. P4p Duran would beat LaMotta as bad as Robinson if not worse but not a 38 year old Duran far above his best.

 

LaMotta is too strong and relentless for the much smaller framed Duran.

Jake's size, strength and pressure negate Duran's great skill and give him a solid decision IMO. LaMotta's a lot more skillful than many realise too. He might ask some big questions of Duran's stamina at this weight late in the fight. He would make Duran fight and work a lot more than Hagler did, and he was tired once or twice in that one.

 

Hagler was way too cautious against Duran. Showed way too much respect. Lamotta wouldn't.

 

Duran was as well, although he couldn't afford to take as many risks as Hagler. He never had the strength or power to match Hagler and it showed on the inside. IMO Duran should have varied his shots and been a little more offensive at long range.
