LaMotta should win really , a proper MW against a welter . But Lamotta lost a lot of fights and Leonard could handle the extra weight , and SRL is one of the fery best ever , so he does have a chance . Still I will say Lamotta

I have a hard time seeing a Welterweight withstand LaMotta's pressure all night long. LaMotta by KO

Leonard was quick though so anything could happen.

I don't remember the source (maybe it was on the ESB board...help me out somebody?)...But after the Leonard/Hagler fight, Jake summarized if he were to fight Ray....he'd lose...He said something to the effect that he would run from him all night and he wouldn't be able to catch him...He also commeted that he had his chances against SRR, because he (Robinson) liked to fight. Perhaps laMotta meant those comments(?)...Maybe they were tongue in cheek...Not sure.
I think this fight would be very open to the judge's interpetation...Ray's boxing/dancing vs. Jake's aggression. Ray would engage LaMotta with flurries in attempts to steal rounds then get out of the way, while LaMotta charges forward (He wasn't exactly slow with his hands, he was pretty quick)...
IMO...I'll say it alot would depend on what era your officials were from....Interesting bout.

Ok...since this is an open forum with all opinions respected, how about if Sugar Ray loses his cool.....and pre-fight makes a move on Jake's good looking wife Vicki.

SRL then out-boxes Jake for 14 rounds, but LaMotta goes ballistic in the 15th and ko's Ray like he did Laurent Dauthuille in the last few seconds which was voted the Ring's Fight of the year.

    It could happen.

I'll pick LaMotta. I think that Leonard would beat a LaMotta at 147 but LaMotta was big, if short, at the weight. The guy is a bull. I think that Leonard was able to win the fight with Hagler sort of half on bluff. On show. On "be careful, i'm slick". LaMotta doens't give a flying ****. He comes with pressure and brings it all night. I think Leonard starts to brawl but to late and drops a decision.

leonard 2 outta 3 times. i think lamottas win over srr and peoples natural tendency to take away from leonard anytime there is a robinson comparison is what is swaying some votes towards lamotta. leonard would outspeed lamotta if i had money on it

I thought Hagler edged Leonard, but still a great showing from Ray.

So, he's not exactly accomplished and proven against middleweights. Much more so at welter, (but he still lost to a smaller guy there in Duran).

Well, the Hagler fight does still prove a lot (even though I felt Hagler shaded it) but I thought Hagler looked a bit too reserved, maybe trying too hard to "out-box" Leonard.

A prime hell-bent LaMotta would be different, and I have to pick him in this match-up. A very strong middleweight, fearless, almost impossible to hurt. Leonard didn't have the same sort of power as Robinson, nor the chin, IMO. Yes, he would have to try to run and bluff his way to victory. I reckon LaMotta would use aggression and body attacks behind a very good jab (as he did with success v.Robinson, it was Jake's jab that was key !) and maybe mid-way he'd' have Leonard hurt, and running and just surviving the last half of the fight.
LaMotta by decision over 12 rounds, perhaps a late stoppage over 15.

    La Motta.

Leonard only had 1 meaningful fight at 160. Over 15 La Motta would get to him.

Interesting insight, L71. Since nobody -- I mean NOBODY! -- no matter how big or bad they were -- wanted to f*ck with Jake outside the ring. Had somebody hit on Vicki in his presence, there'd have been a nuclear explosion.

Leonard. Too much speed. In a 3 fight series Ray takes 2 of them. A lot of people forget that Ray could punch as well as box. He could get LaMotta's respect though he certainly would'nt stop Jake. Ray's foot speed would be too much for Jake, he just would'nt be there enough times for Jake to really put any kind of hurt on him. Too much speed and ability though they would be 3 fights for the ages.
