I don't think Mike Tyson is paid $20M. Not even Canelo is paid that much in his biggest fights.

Tyson is probably paid at most $250K for Paul fight.

Butterbean. He crushed cans of tin. Paul's victims were made of plastic.

Galento isn't exactly the most skilled package but he was eager to actually fight and exchange bombs. More importantly, he wasn't retired. I fancy two ton to bring Paul back to reality.

I'm not sure if this is a real post. But for the purposes of this discussion I'll presume it is.
Jake Paul should get credit, yes, for bringing new fans to the sport (or at least a version of it - more on that later), paying opponents well and for training hard. He also has a degree of ability.
However... he cannot be the face of boxing, because what he is doing is not boxing, in the sense that we all know it. It is a FORM of boxing where he hand picks opponents to create a spectacle. If he were attempting boxing properly he would be working his way up the rankings and taking on known challengers in their prime. Which will never happen. So he certainly doesn't 'take on any challenger ' or take risks - he only takes 'risks' as far as fighting those at his own level.
So, no, Jake Paul is not the face of boxing - it's unlikely he ever will be. But, in fairness, he is the face of misfits \ youtuber boxing, which obviously has a fan base. But no one should pretend it is boxing in the traditional - or actual - sense.

This. A 60 year old dude shouldn't be near a boxing ring, full stop. No, not even the legend of Forteman could do it.

lol as if Paul would entertain the idea.

Paul wouldn't dare get in the ring with a less powerful highly skilled boxer in Bivol. Why would be dare get in the ring with one of the 5 hardest punching light-heavyweights of the past 30 years?

Ike Ibeabuchi is making a comeback in December. I'm a bit embarassed of saying this, but I'd like to see Jake Paul fight him.

Paul would never fight Beterbiev. Beterbiev would brutally end his run and diminish his drawing power. He won't fight for a title unless one of the sanctioning bodies digs up Chavez Jr or gives him a historically soft touch for a vacant title.

George Foreman in his book ‘By George’ has a line: Boxing has always had an element of ‘come see the bearded lady.’

It’s a circus. There is no regulation, really — I mean commissions make sure it’s conducted within a rulebook in their jurisdictions (no horseshoes in the gloves, that sort of thing) but there’s nothing that says a fighter has to fight other fighters of a certain stature or level.

Butterbean was a sideshow attraction but fought on real championship undercards. Foreman’s early comeback was in out-of-the-way towns against out-of-the-say opponents (actually not that different from him piling up victories when he first turned pro with an Olympic gold medal).

Celebrity Boxing was a show on Fox that had washed-up sit-com stars and other D-listers fighting. Floyd Patterson defended the heavyweight title against a guy with zero pro fights. Ali Raymi got ranked. Muhammad Ali ‘fought’ the Japanese wrestler Antonio Inoki.

For that matter we’ve had 3-round tournaments featuring ‘real’ fighters and more dubious entrants, in both America and the UK.

I could go on and on. It’s always had this element and purists have always both held their nose and taken advantage of it in whatever ways they could. They’ll shake their heads but offer them a payday on an undercard of one of these spectacles and they’ll be first in line.

Mike Tyson lent some legitimacy to Jake Paul as far as the public goes. He was 100% complicit in it, profited from it and called Jake “a great fighter” right there on video for all to see after the fight.

    Welcome to the circus.
