So I've been wanting to do some mma training mainly because ive been sort of a slob lately and I find mma to be a much more fun way of getting physical activity into my life than lifting weights running etc. I just found out Jake Shields opened and mma gym very close to my apartment. There are other mma gyms around here as well that cost about fifteen to twenty dollars a month less than his. I was wondering if it would be worth it to shell out the extra twenty a month to train at his gym. Would it be worth it? Or would it make no difference since im a complete novice anyways. What do you guys think? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
If you actually get to train with him then hell yeah it would be worth it. If he's just the superstar who comes around at times when no one else is aloud to train and you only get to see him walk through the doors then **** it. If you get the chance to train with him then open your ears and pay attention to what he has to say.
Hes definitely in the gym very often. But do you think the advice of an expert would make a difference if I'm just a beginner?
YES! If that is the gym he uses primarily for his training and has most of his coaches and they also tend to other members in terms of their training/personal goals, then you should be down there RIGHT NOW! Want to get in shape? MMA is easily among the best possible ways to get in VERY good shape! Not only that, but it's functional! So, while you won't exactly bulk up to Mariusz Pudzianowski size...which doesn't necessarily serve a great function, you'll be getting functional muscle and also training the core of your body and just...everything! I can barely begin to count the number of people that I alone have talked into taking just pure BJJ as a means of reliable self-defense and just plain staying healthy/active! Not a single person, not one, has come back to me and said, "Eh, didn't really like it..."
I decided to do it. I figure that fifteen a month extra isn't too much extra to pay to ensure that my training is very good.
Good stuff. Let us know how it goes. First walk in and see how the instructors are and how well they interact with their students...I'd imagine well, but always should be done. If you like what you see...golden!
Absolutely. Perhaps not from the very beginning but in a year(which I would still consider a beginner) you might start coming across problems in your technique that only experienced fighters can see.
