Can anyone besides me remember Nugget, the girlie mag whose models made Mamie Van Doren look virtuous? Well, it was Nugget that sent James Baldwin to Chicago to cover Patterson-Liston and he contributed some of the most intriguing and original observations about Sonny. Fellow obsessive: I'm curious to know your reactions. http://www.thestacksreader.com/the-fight-patterson-vs-liston/
A brilliant piece as you would expect from a writer as gifted as James Baldwin. It illustrates once again the tragedy of Sonny Liston--a man who would ALWAYS be branded as a brute menace. But Baldwin sees through that and looks at Sonny through a more sympathetic lens--which was VERY unusual during that time!
