Smith was never worlds hwt champion. Everyone and there brother won a paper title back in those days. Fighters who should have only been contenders were walking around calling themselves "champion". Smith was a contender and nothing more.
Well sure. In the grand scheme of things Bonecrusher Smith was no more a world champion than Witherspoon, Dokes, Tubbs, Page, Coetzee, Berbick, Thomas, Norton, weaver, Tate, Botha, Bentt, Morrison, Mercer, Damiani, Haye, Valuev, Terrell, Ellis, Savold etc.
You can apply that ruling to all today's heavyweight title holders as well so it's not something that was unique during Smith's time in the 80s.
How you rate his abilities and accomplishments is fine, certainly your right. Lots of titlists don't become lineal or unified champions. Mostly because they weren't good enough. To say he didn't have heart, however ... you're pretty much a pathetic worm of a keyboard warrior and unworthy of sniffing the jock of a real fighter, much less posting. Of course, that's just my opinion.
He came close to knocking out Razor Ruddock while past prIme, since it hasn't been mentioned. He basically gave Lewis the blueprint.
I think Bonecrusher (what a fabulous nickname!) is still the only college graduate to win a heavyweight title...
Marvis Frazier was an excellent heavyweight fighter with some very good wins in that stacked 80's heavyweight era.
